I haven't really looked at them so I don't have an opinion of whether Gibson does a good or bad job; however, I have noticed that you now can get "baked maple" (whatever that is) or "double laminate rosewood" fingerboards.  Of course, maybe these are fine "innovations" but I'm a bit skeptical.

I just had the (dis)pleasure of seeing one of those "value priced" Les Pauls with the maple (?) fretboards and this really cheap finish.  The local store had a white one and the paint was just...no clear-coat, or if it was, it was like a matte, and the paint just felt very...gritty.  Maybe it was supposed to be like this, but...  :tard:
