But, since we're on the subject of Hetfeld playing "un-metal" instruments, he did play a B-Bender Tele on one of the Load/Re-Load incarnations.

Hetfield used a B bender a few times over the years. In addition to "Mama Said," he also used it on "The Unforgiven II" off Reload, and also on "My Friend of Misery" from the Black album.
