It's good to be a Texan

No worries.  We're just going to give them all amnesty and voting rights and pretend it's about giving Mexicans the American dream and not about buying their votes for generations to come.

I was in the Dallas area years ago, and I wanted to buy a bottle of wine.  I was told if I wanted to get a bottle, I had to drive a couple miles, but that I could get a gun right down the street.  I know the Texans are a proud people, but it just seemed odd to me.

Dallas area?

I don't know of a city near me that is dry.. hmmm but then again years ago.. could be.

Either way you can get your wine anywhere you want now.

Dangerous, I agree, but you can't blame them for wanting a better place to live, I do blame my socialist govt. for not enforcing ALL the laws, ie illegal imigrants,   I'm an illegal speeder when I get on my motorcycle, and they can't wait to catch me.
So true, they strive so hard to jack with us that are in this country rightfully. And could careless about the illegals that are bringing this country down...

They jack with us cuz they know we have money and can pay.  :icon_biggrin:

Interesting article for you guys, about a different view of immigration. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/23/business/global/23immigrant.html?pagewanted=1&partner=rss&emc=rss

Yeah it's great!  Except that you have the WORST education and healthcare in the country. Also the highest teen pregnancy rate and many more nasty things... http://www.borderhealth.org/files/res_880.pdf

As Gen. Sheridan said "If I owned Texas and Hell, I'd rent out Texas and live in Hell."
Not to mention the most polluted air in the nation.... more than California, New York and Florida combined who rank #2, #3 & #4. We did surpass California this year in becoming #1 in wind power but that doesn't yet offset the coal plants and other polluters who own Austin.

On teen pregnancy who said it better than Bristol Palin, daughter of Gov. Sarah Palin, in that abstinence only education doesn't work... as Bristol could be the poster teen mother for that salient point.

On education they were "teaching the test" here long before that philosophy went to D.C. in 2001. Even with the controversial "Robin Hood" school financing here in TX I still get calls to donate limos for affluent schools in North Texas to raise funds to build a $100,000 butterfly gardens for their gated community elementary school while kids in poorer counties don't even have adequate textbooks. Obviously I declined donating and proceeded to disclose the property taxes I pay to live in a town where every subdivision just about has their own public elementary school.

My favorite Texas doozies are: (sarcasm)
1. The breed-specific legislation demonizing my Rottweilers along with pitbulls and Chows where I'd get 10 years for a bite.... accidental or otherwise.
2. The attempt legislators made to regulate how high school cheerleaders dance.
3. Voting out the Price-To-Beat bill which kept Texans from saving 35% on home energy costs starting in 2006 thus giving energy companies an additional 35% profit margin.

Texas has some good things... and at least we have at least one basketball team that reaches the 2nd round in the playoffs which is more than I can say for either football team.

Go Mavs!!! :)

I don't say God Bless anyone, ever, I'm not a big god fearing man. So this has special meaning to me....

God Bless Ronald Reagan

Texas sucks, everyone should stop moving here.  J/K

TX is the only state I've ever lived in, but I've lived in 3 distinct areas of the state.  It's far from perfect.  I've been to over half of the other 49 states, which I feel helps qualify my opinion of my chosen home state.  When traveling, I find myself wanting to stay where we're visiting.  My wife and I are starting a tradition of going to OR every summer.  I would move there in heartbeat, but I've never stayed there during a winter, so I'll reserve judgement.  My biggest bitch about TX is the weather.  It's basically summer year round with a cold front or two.  We have some of the lowest wages in the country for my line of work, but it's offset by some of the lowest home prices.  Sure we have a state sales tax, but no state income tax.  My point, no where is perfect.

Texas last in education?  I suppose it's possible.  A few years ago, we were 13th from last.  Guess it depends who is doing the poll.  I know we're not first.  If we rank last in HS diplomas received, that's good news for me.  I've got a 4 year degree and am apparently surrounded by idiots, so I guess things just got a little easier for me.

"Texas.  It isn't the whole enchilada, but it's definitely a very big Taco."  -Dan Rather.
