It's good to be a Texan

The top of the complete ranking -- which, for ease, we have broken down into the two smaller lists, of the best big and small cities for jobs -- is dominated by one state: Texas. The Lone Star State may have lost a powerful advocate in Washington, but it's home to a remarkable eight of the top 20 cities on our list -- including No. 1-ranked Odessa, a small city in the state's northwestern region. Further, the top five large metropolitan areas for job growth -- Austin, Houston, San Antonio, Ft. Worth and Dallas--are all in Texas' "urban triangle."

Yeah it's great!  Except that you have the WORST education and healthcare in the country. Also the highest teen pregnancy rate and many more nasty things... http://www.borderhealth.org/files/res_880.pdf

As Gen. Sheridan said "If I owned Texas and Hell, I'd rent out Texas and live in Hell."

I know there are BIG bugs at Brooks AFB.  The mosquito should be the state bird.  :laughing7:

No, I haven't.  I'm sure it's a nice place, by and large.  I don't actually think Texas is worse than Hell.  :icon_tongue:  Most of my Texas-bashing is not serious, though that document I linked to IS serious.

Funny story, I was almost a Texan... my dad's division at work got transferred to Ft. Worth when I was 6 or 7.  But my parents ended up deciding against the move and he quit.  You don't get a whole lot of Jews moving from New York to Texas for some reason...  :toothy11:

But I can still criticize Texas.  After all, I haven't been to Afghanistan or North Korea either, but I still think those places suck.  (Not as bad as Texas.  :toothy12:)

Besides DBW, it'd be difficult to be a vegan in Texas.   :icon_biggrin:

Dude, I live in Wisconsin, it ain't exactly easy here.  Bratwurst and cheese are key food groups.  Madison is a pretty hippy-dippy town, though, which is handy for us hippy-dippy types.  :hello2:

I'll take Texas an our so called "crappy health care" and our so called "WORST education" over NY or Wisc. any day.  And at the time of my graduation the school I graduated from in Richardson was ranked 2nd nationally in academics.

Dude, you're #1 among states in in percentage of adults without a HS diploma, and in percentage of people without health insurance.  But obviously there exists good healthcare and good schools in Texas.  It's not like EVERYone is an ignoramus, it's just that you manage to educate fewer people to the high school level than all 49 other states

We're too busy partying man, we ain't got time to worry about school. Besides, 46% of Americans that have degrees are in jobs that don't even pertain to the degree they got in the first place... :dontknow:

I've got concerns when a document puts number of gun shows as a public safety issue.

As for health, when I read stats that are so completely one-sided.  I get suspicious, regardless of who or what it is about.  I virtually guarantee a report put out by an organization called US-Mexico Border Health is going to do everything they can to include illegals.  In border states, that is going to go a long way to making their healthcare and education look a lot worse than they actually are.  It's a virtual certainty that is a large reason why hispanic drop out rates are three times as high as other races according to that report.  Hell, we had a case recently that pointed out how you can't even tell who isn't a citizen in some cases.  A 22 year old college graduate is being deported because, despite living here since she was eight, neither her parents nor herself ever bothered to become citizens.  On the one hand it sucks for her because she is basically American, on the other hand she has had four years to deal with it on her own.  We've got plenty of children of illegals in our school system.  Many of them have significant language issues and, big surprise, don't do well on standardized testing.  Their parents, being illegal, are working for less than minimum wage, so yes, they are well below the poverty line.  I'm sure you'll say that's just a small number except that, unless I'm mistaken, whites were actually passed by hispanics for the majority in Texas.  Can't remember if that's legal citizens or if it includes illegals.  Either way, it is a major issue for border states.  We're not perfect, but we're doing something right.

I love Texas, I would never live anywhere else in this great country, BUT we do have a bit crap education, but that's only some areas.. where I live, our school D is great, good teachers, great test scores.

Our healthcare is fine too, it just depends where in the state you are really, it's huge you know.. haha.

Yes obviously the author of the booklet has an agenda.  It's not that border organization btw, I believe it's written by a liberal Texas state senator whose name I forget.  He of course didn't list any of the good stuff about Texas.  You know how we liberals hate America, and nothin's more American than Texas!  :toothy11:

Not really.  You run down the rankings he listed and, for the most part, if we're in the top 10 it's something bad.  I didn't see an author on it so I assumed it was from an affiliate of that organization.  Either way, if they're picking it up, you can make a lot of the same assumptions.

And while we're quoting:

The trouble with our liberal friends is not that they are ignorant, but that they know so much that isn't so.

Ronald Reagan

oh and the top 20 highest growing cities or something, texas has 8 of them... woo!  :tard:

Every summer I see pics in the newspaper with hordes of illegals swarming across the border into texas, many of them dying from exposure.

Maybe they should keep their asses in their own country, we sure as hell don't need them here...

Dangerous, I agree, but you can't blame them for wanting a better place to live, I do blame my socialist govt. for not enforcing ALL the laws, ie illegal imigrants,  I'm an illegal speeder when I get on my motorcycle, and they can't wait to catch me.
