Is the added cost of a specific choice top worth it?

I was playing around with the body builder and while looking at specific tops, especially on the Rosewood tops, the price can increase as much as $300, shooting a $400 body to over $700.

Would you pay the added cost of a specific top or buy it and hope for the best (assuming that there isn't one you want in the showcase)?

Really, only you can answer that.  The preference for a particular visual on your guitar is completely subjective.  Is it worth 300 bucks for a particular rosewood top? Well, not to me - but to you, it might be.

Now, the answer to the other underlying question - "am I likely to get a decent looking top if I just roll the dice?" - seems to be "probably, since Warmoth generally does an excellent job with the visuals," but as in all such things, the subjectivity of it all still puts it squarely in the realm of "only you can decide if what you got is what you like."

Sorry to be so noncommital.

Yes and no.  Yes, because it's disposable income and little new shiny things are what makes the world go round.  No, because in the Budha/Ghandi sense, no one needs any of it.

I think bagman said it best.  That is really a question only you can answer...
If I found a top that I absolutly fell in love with, I would pay the extra fee to be certain that is what I received.
But that is just me.
Good luck on your choice &  :rock-on:

Everybody here makes sense, and I'm just going to add that I agree. Sometimes a piece speaks to you, and you must have it. Money isn't an issue. Other times, you're looking for a style or a vibe, and Warmoth's choices are generally very good. Just look at the Showcase bodies. They don't try to cheap out on anything. Everything is always top-notch.

it also depends on what wood you are looking to unique choice. for me, it is Canary, which I can unique choice for $50 (last I checked). to me, $50 is well worth picking the exact piece of wood, but more money over that? IDK. +1 it's up to you

I payed $225 for a Flame Koa top.
Was it worth it? Every single penny.
Would I buy one again? If I have the money, no doubt in my mind.

It's all about what you want. Do you want a guitar that looks completely badass that you/others will drool over when you/they see it? Is it worth the price?
Only you can answer that.

This topic was only brought up to see what others were thinking.  So far, there hasn't been that "I gotta have top" for me except for the VIP that I bought out of the showcase 2 years ago.  I still look at it and wonder how I got so lucky to snag it.  There was another one, but I let it get away.  Otherwise, there are lots of others that I would love to have, but none that I can justify the mental beating I will take from the wife.

In the mean time, I'll keep stashing bits of cash away until I find a body to match the neck that is sitting in my closet patiently waiting.  :laughing7:

I'm more for the unique choice on certain fretboards, like a nice figured maple or striped macassar ebony.

Most definitely!!  :icon_thumright:

not when you're sitting there thinking "man, this build is going to be expensive..."

but when you're sitting there after it's in your hands thinking "well, this isn't what i imagined..." then yes. it's definitely worth it.

I paid the tax.  Was it worth it for Flame Maple?  I doubt it...... I didn't get anything THAT exciting, and I picked it out.  I kinda wonder what I would have received if I just rolled the dice?  Would I do it again..... probably not, but then again I doubt it if I will ever buy another guitar body for myself again. I'm all about scratch building my bodies now.......

Ok so I am sitting here thinking about how to wrap this post up..... and I came up with this:  I paid $75 for a piece of maple that was roughly 12X24 (I know these numbers aren't perfect, but for the math they work) and 1/8" thick.  A board foot is 12X12X1"........ so by my math, a board foot of flame maple I paid $300 a board foot for the maple on my guitar. (there is roughly 1/4 a board foot of wood in a lam top) Is it worth $300 a board foot..... Phuck NO!!!!!!!  Maybe to put it into that perspective....... All those top boards you can pick out, although they are nice looking and what not, it is just another way for Warmoth to really make a lot of money.  Almost everywhere around the country maple runs about $6-8 per board foot.  And Warmoth charges $300 per board foot at the minimum for the privledge of picking out your own top...... You don't want to know what the actual price of the board would be if you picked out a $225 top?  I'm gonna tell you, it is $900 a board foot.  Now keep in mind there is no extra labor involved on their end for the honor of picking out your board, no more labor than a lam top you didn't pick out.  Smart money is on letting them decide........ once the costs of materials comes into play.  Now that I did this math problem, my mind is made up, no more Warmoth's for me.......

Then I would suggest you don't buy them  :cool01:
Be happy with what you get...

When I built my bass, I decided I was just going to go all out, spend more, and get exactly what i wanted. I paid an extra $125 for a unique-choice top, and I do not regret it at all. I can't say i know what a regular top would have looked like, but this thing is beautiful and I got exactly what I was looking for.
