Is it a bad idea...

to go with a string-thru TOM bridge to save the $50 i would otherwise spend on a Gotoh 510? If it makes no difference in function, I actually think i like the look of a string-through more anyway and it'd be nice to save the money

It seems more sensible to me, really. Looks better, and may possibly make a minor positive contribution to the sound.

I would do just that, I prefer the string thru myself and I dont even like the looks of the Gotoh 510 bridge, heck no its not a bad Idea if its what you like, its your guitar and you'll be more disapointed for not going with what you like and end up wishing you would have got the TOM.
Take your time when making your choices, I spend alot of time thinking about each part and its alternatives before I drop the cash, that way I have done my home work and wont be regretting my choices later, or thinking jeez I coulda made a better guitar if I would have taken more time to plan and have been more patient.  :icon_thumright:

word. I guess since i hadn't seen many builds that had TOM bridges on them, I thought maybe functionally they're not as good as those other models. Although I know that cost doesn't always equal quality, there's generally a reason when something costs that much more.

because it is more costly to build. nothing else. and why would someone buy it you may ask? because they're sick in the head! i cant come up with a reason. i mean if you have a vintage gibson that had just the stop bar and the strings wrap around then it might make sense but if i had a vintage gibson i dont think i'd alter it, even in non permanant ways. maybe on a reissue which i wouldn't buy, or one of those PRS guitars that has a wraparound bridge for some inexplicable reason. maybe there is a theoretical reason but i'm not buying it.

I like the TOM for a couple of reasons.

One they are ambidexterous, meaning I don't have to buy some special left handed made piece

Also LR Baggs makes a TOM with piezos.  I wanted the option of an acoustic tone and that was the best way for me to do just that.

Also I really like the recessed TOM with arched string through holes, I just think it looks better than a tailpiece.
