Can we start a list of artists that can craft beautiful inlays?
Any suggestions who can do a Tiger plate?

That is an  :icon_scratch: interesting technique Mr. Skeleton is using to play his violin. I wonder if he also has two left feet...  :laughing8:

...to match his two left hands of course  :icon_tongue:

Just because you can doesn't mean you should. This stuff doesn't belong on a guitar, its best kept on a web page.

This is pretty cool though:

Agreed! Especially if that was on a nice natural finished guitar. I'm Hispanic so it took me a loooooong time to learn about subtlety. Every once in a while I slip up and put gold time on a car or paint my Ibanez with blue jumbo metalflake and put a white pearl pickguard on it. But I'm trying. Moderation is key. Even if my grandma's house is painted with Easter egg colors inside and out. :icon_jokercolor:

Hehe! The heavily Polish/Catholic section of Detroit I grew up in ended up largely Hispanic as the WWII brides died off but the remainder staunchly resisted the "black plague", and it was often shocking how some of my friend's parents decorated their homes. I mean, even as a teenager I'd have to say to myself "WTF were these guys thinking about?" <grin>

God, I miss those days. Some of the dearest friends I've ever had. And nobody loves you like a Latina, even as she hates your guts. Too bad I'm such an old curmudgeon, so I can't chase any down any more.

Passionate, they are
<sigh>

Here's a question....

Can inlays be added to a finished neck?

For example, if I decided i wanted something different than Warmoth offer and wanted to get custom ones installed - can these be added post production by someone else?

Obviously I'm talking about a simple design that would not cross under the frets, or would any design require the frets to be removed?

Is a retro fit likely to damage / ruin my select macassar ebony fret board?

This thread shows some great inlay artists - I'd be looking for someone to do the complete job??

Yes, totally.
I ordered my neck with no inlays, just dots on the side.
I'm actually using inlay stickers for my neck, just because it's major $$$$ to do custom inlays like I want.
As long as you have a professional inlay artist to do the neck, it won't f*ck up the fret board.
But you're gonna pay!

It is possible, but the frets will need to be removed first, then re-installed after the work is done.

Ah, ok.

I'll leave it then. I'm happy with the trapezoid ones anyway.

It depends.

From the sharkinlays FAQ http://www.sharkinlay.com/faq.htm:

Fret Board Questions

Can I add inlays to my current guitar?
Yes, with reservations. Inlaying fret boards that already have frets, presents special problems, namely the frets and current inlays. If your guitar has inlay dots, I may be able to inlay over them. The inlay design has to completely cover the dot on each fret you want inlaid. When the dots are removed, this leave a round hole in your fret board. There is no way to patch this (and make it look good), so the new inlays need to cover the hole. Or, if your tricky, we can use the dots in the design itself. The next problem is the frets. Inlays past the 12th fret (12-24) are very hard to do since I can't get the tools into the small area between the frets. Therefore, your guitar may need to be refretting for a complex design. This adds $250 to the cost.

England's Custom Inlay did the barbed wire inlay on Valentina with the frets installed.  However, I think they were sorry they took on my neck because what was quoted to be a couple week turn around ended up spending four months in their shop.
