I have a Question?

Maybe I can kill two birds (not literally speaking) in one whack, if someone can answer the following question: is it possible to get the sound of that deep warm sound of the ltd that i was looking at with a Mahogany strat with mahogany neck? My thinking is this: Build me a Strat as I originaly sought and still get somewhat of a les paul sound at the same time!
Traditionaly, the Les Paul is usually decked with Mahogany Body/ Mahogany Neck, correct? so a Strat with the same thing SHOULD sound similar, correct? so in literal terms I am killing two birds in one whack, correct? someone correct me if i am wrong in my thinking, and i think it would be a little cheaper!
Anybody?  :guitarplayer2:

Not really. It's partly the wood, but it's mostly the shorter neck (which you can get by using a conversion neck) along with a hardtail bridge (which you can also get) that's buried pretty deep in a very solid body (which you can't). So, you can get pretty close, but it's never quite there.

The mass and the shape of the body also contribute to the tone. Don't forget about neck profile and construction, those things matter too. Using the right parameters you could probably capture similar characteristics. Good luck, many have tried and many have failed. I'm willing to bet if you go this route you will probably build a badass guitar and still end up wanting an LP in the end. Check out the precision guitar kits. Those can be affordableish. I think either way you will end up with a good guitar.

+1 to Cagey

Conversion neck, humbuckers, mahogany parts outta get you close.  If it doesn't, you can debate neck joint differences or even why SGs, LPs, and other similar materialed guitars sound different.

Your gonna find that the neck is the #1 tone shaper besides the pickups.

The LP neck is thicker in profile than the Strat neck, even the "thin" LP necks.

Yes wood makes a difference - mahogany is warmer than maple.

Length plays a difference.

In my limited way of viewing life, I can see how the break angle at the peghead makes a difference - mostly because it effects how the neck would resonate.  Its that resonance that makes the neck tops on the list of tone-shapers.

If you got a thick mahogany neck, in conversion length, and stuck it on your strat, and added real HB pickups, not just ones that fit in single coil pockets, then you'll have a strat that sounds a bit li ke an SG or LP.

I review, I see I wasn't entirely clear...

I didn't mean the LP bridge was deeply buried in the body, but the neck. Same conclusion, though.

My favorite combination is a Mahogany body with a 59 Round back Maple neck (Canary ain't too bad either).

All of my Warmoths are Mahogany bodied, 3 with Maple necks, 1 with a Canary neck. They all have some of the Les Paul vibe going on.

Can White Korina or Black Korina be used as a substitute for Mahogany? and what other woods are warm sounding like Mahogany?

Yep you can, I have a Black Korina Chambered with a Mahogany ply top ..... love it.
And a Black Korina Chambered with Black Korina ply top .... love that to.

:dontknow:  I'm preferring the BK over the Mahogany, I have both types in solid and chambered.

Makore is about the closest sounding to Mahogany.
Here is a tone comparison chart ...

That should give you some references.  :icon_thumright:

OR you could go all out and use Indian Rosewood  $$$$$$$  :icon_biggrin:

Thanks!

If you feel the bridge is critical you can do that too. And if you recess it - you even keep the Fender unangled neck pocket.
