I'm building a hardtail strat and am wondering this: If I use schaller locking tuners (a sturdy favorite of mine) do I still have to use string trees? I don't want to buy Sperzels with graduated heights, but I will if I have to.

Unless you get a 13 degree angled neck, you will need a string tree on the 1st & 2nd string; Sperzels or other graduated post tuners the alternative.

Jinxed - - damn I want your name! ;)

I have Schaller locking tuners (the Fender branded ones) and I don't use the string tee on my strat. Works fine for me. Just look for the Schallers that say staggerd. Then you need to be careful with which ones you put in each spot. Mine didn't come labeled in any way I could figure out - so I had to eyeball it.

Those look cool, NT, but 20 pounds is an awful lot for a string tree.  I've been using the barrel-shaped ones for years.  You can lubricate it by rubbing the graphite of a pencil on it.

it looks like it would be pretty easy to cut sections of a thin delrin or maybe Ultex pick out and glue them up inside the bent metal trees... I had to have a string tree for three strings on my seven-string, and the strings come off of the Planet Waves tuners really high up the post, so I improvised one:

I liked it so much I did it again on my five-string. :toothy12: The one on the seven is actually a couple of picks laminated together, a tortoise on top and a thick Ultex on the bottom for strength, big triangle picks cut down to size. I'll be upgrading the bass to a brass one, one of these days.

I like those Hipshot string retainers for basses.  I think they look really cool and functional.
