I hate incorrect tablature

I'm having a helluva time finding a correct tab for Ween's Buckingham Green guitar solo the one around 1:30.  I guess I'm going to have to slow the song down and try to figure it out.  It kind of blows my mind how many of the tabs I've come across for it so far have just not sounded very good at all.  Anyone good at tabbing can help me out?

the biggest problem i've found with tabs on the internet are that people will take a tab somebody else wrote out, copy and paste, and call it their own. so of course the mistakes that are in tab #1 never get corrected. i hate that.

anyway, just curious... where do you go for tabs? i've always used www.911tabs.com. they're usually pretty close, and they can have multiple versions for each song, which is nice if they AREN'T copied and pasted. of course they usually are so i'm still listening closely to try to figure things out. but they usually have the correct tuning at least :icon_biggrin: i checked and they have the song you're looking for. no idea how accurate it might be though

I also use 911tabs.  I try to always get a Guitar Pro file if I can.  In this case there is a Power Tab, but it sounds pretty wonky when it plays.  I'm going to try to convert it into GP and work on it a bit.

You might have to be a member to download, but it does have a 5 star rating from the community, so it's promising.

Does it normally take a long time for powertabs.net to send you a confirmation email to be a member?  I put in my email and nothing happened.

hannah if you don't find a good tab in a couple of weeks send me a message & let me know what parts you can't get

Will do.  I'm working on it now, but sometimes I have trouble picking out the notes when there is heavy distortion.  I'll let you know if I need help.  Thanks!

I'm not sure exactly, I've been a member for years.  If you want it, let me know, and I'll email it to ya or something.

I've never found tabs to be completely spot on. Having said that, I do use tab very heavily as a general guideline that gets me closer to playing what I hear in whatever song I am learning.

Ummm, gosh - that would be like, what every great guitarist in the world learned how to do, in order to be a great guitarist. What a burden!  :toothy10:

Mike Johnstone, a roomie at the military academy they both attended, recalls Duane playing along with a B.B. King album barefooted, stopping and holding the record with his toe while he learned a lick, letting the record go until he got to the next lick, then going through both sides of the record and repeating the entire process for hours at a time.

I was in a band called "Duane Allman's Toe".... :blob7:

I think if I were having to do this with only a record player, I would probably just make up a different solo in the same key and call it good.  I can only handle a certain level of frustration.

I always use ultimate-guitar.com  mostly because there are several versions of each song and they're all user rated. so the 5 star rated ones are usually pretty close if not perfect.  usually.

That's pretty much what I did, but even the highest rated one was completely off.  It had the whole solo tuned a half step higher than it should be, left out a bunch of hammer ons, pulls offs, and vibrato, and left out many notes.

I still had some LPs I learned from even when they were somwhat dated at the time, very much a PITA. Tapes made much more sense, and my first CD player didn't have a rewind feature, it would just go to the next song.

The old school tabs from the magazines were pretty decent for the most part, but in other cases you wondered if the person transcribing even played guitar. The notes were right, but the fingerings were horribad. Mostly I'd just do it by ear but working out the note-for-note thing definitely has merit also. Andy Aleodort certainly had better ears than I did at 12, and you realize how many minute things you miss when you see someone else's transcription.

that solo isn't that rough - you'll be doing yourself a huge favor if you take the time to figure it out.

edit - I looked at one of the tabs and they just tune the guitar down but play in A minor (with the added G#) position to make it easier. One part I looked at certainly would get you in the ballpark. After that it's up to you to "put the eyebrows on it" so to speak.

one thing I learned a while back is you often need to tune to the track, because tunings are all over the place. If a position seems a little odd it's probably wrong since most guitarist like a few favorite keys that are guitar friendly.

It still beats the stuffing out of all those billions of songbooks that have every single song written with first-position cowboy chords - like there's nothing above the 3rd fret, and barre chords are too scary for belief.

Ear-training: not for wimps!

But the sooner you start, the better.

That solo?  typical, slow, pentatonic minor-ish.

Should be a piece of cake... it ain't Yngwie, that's for sure.  :toothy12:

Those books are really designed for vocalists though.  The chords are just there so they can figure out some simple accompaniment for when they try out for American Idol.

I totally agree. I can hear exactly what's going on and the only issue might be a bit of memory to retain it.
Also this wouldn't be writable in tab with any accuracy because of the bends.

Do yourself the favor of working or your ear power.

It's not so much that I have problems hearing notes normally, it's just with heavy distortion that I have trouble sometimes.  That and it's just a pain in the butt.  I would always rather just have correct music to begin with than have to figure it out.  When I get done with it, it will be a good tab even with the bends though because I'll do it in Guitar Pro.
