I absolutely understand this is and always will be a sensitive and powder keg topic, I come in piece friends. lol. I recently ordered an unfinished maple neck and fretboard from warmoth with the intent to tinker around and relic it just because I like to tinker and I thought i could do a pretty decent job of it. I really don't have an opinion either way on the topic of relic guitars, i know I've seen some that look cheesy as hell and I also know I've played a few Murphy labs at fuller's in Houston that I seriously thought about asking them if they would take the vehicle I drove there as a trade. I also have a seagull acoustic that I've owned for 30 years that is absolutely beat to the point that it looks like a terrible relic job and I swear I'm the only owner of that instrument and it is all from play time and on a few occasions my dumb-assness (forgot it outside by the campfire all night at one point in my earlier years may or may not have happened). Point is, I choose to not make that big a deal about the relic thing. I love Guitar and I love tinkering so here is my work in progress tele neck relic project. I have a bare tele body in my closet from another vender (i didnt know about Warnoth when i ordered 🙁) so this neck project could turn into a thing. Truth is, it already is a thing and I am thinking of the next after this.........

You’re allowed to like whatever you like! I think “dragged behind a truck” level relics always look pretty bad, but a little nitro checking and fine wear does give a guitar a certain mojo, earned or otherwise. There’s clearly a market for it, or the Murphy Lab/Historic Makeovers/MJT/Bloomdoom wouldn’t exist.

I think you did a fine job, the fingerboard wear is my only personal turnoff.

I debated trying the fingerboard wear but since it's a "project" neck for trial and error I decided to give it a go. I don't think I would again if I had a redo. I'll see how it looks when assembled with strings and the body. I still want the headstock a bit darker and smoother as well.

Just thinking, when you play/age a reliqued guitar, does it wear off the wear and end up new?
