Summer 2010 guitar project...
I finished an Ibanez RG 1-piece Mahogany replacement body from Legacy One Guitars (to be mounted to a neck from Warmoth). I used 5 cans (11 oz. each) of Duplicolor filler/primer to fill the grain. Sanded it with 400 grit paper (dry) between cans. It's still not adequately filled but I decided to move on...
1st Pic:
Painted it deep jewel green metallic (Duplicolor Perfect Match acrylic lacquer). Let it hang in my closet for about a week. Grain still showing a little...
2nd Pic:
Cleared with SprayMax 2K urethane. Used the whole can with the nozzle set on broad spray pattern (2 dust coats plus 5 regular coats). On the 3rd coat I noticed some fogging so I took it inside and hit it with a hair dryer. Fogging disappeared. Hung it in my closet again for another week. Grain sill showing...
3rd Pic:
Fine (wet) sanded starting with 400 grit. Needed to go over the body 4 times with the 400 grit paper to get rid of the "orange peel." You can still see a few bright spots near the right side of the neck pickup route. I did not want to continue with the 400 grit because I had already unintentionally sanded thru some areas. Continued with the finer grits (600, 800, 1000, and 1500). Notice that the grain visible in the first 2 pics above is no longer visible after fine sanding (I don't know why)...
