It was in the mid 70s while listening to a friends blues records I heard a sound that changed my mind about what a guitar player should sound like.
I was listening to a howling wolf 33 rpm recording and the sound of the guitar blew my mind, It actually took me a few weeks to find out this was not wolf, but a hired player named Hubert Sumlin.
As i listened I heard a guy who could play a great riff, intricate in the mixture of chord, bass and lead, and still just sit back and be part of the rhythm section. This guy knew how to play his part in a band and never over ride anyone. Yet could take a solo so melodic and so powerful you could never figure anyone else playing that song. I spent the next 30 some years admiring this man. And going long distances to hear him play. Sadly, he passed away today, I am at a loss in my life. A major hero of mine has passed and I will never get to see his smiling face onstage again. Doing what I loved to see him do.
He would play his part, yet he ruled the stage. On of my favorite memories was when he and Kenny were on stage, No one can chunk out a song like KWS, but on this day, I watched Kenny set back and saw admiration in his eyes as he watched Hubert, I think I saw Kenny trying to imitate the fluid movements of Mr Sumlins hands as he played rhythm and moved into a solo. I know he was humbled to be on stage with the legend.
God rest the soul of Hubert this day.
The loss is great and it tears at my heart to know one of my strongest influences has passed on.
