How large of a piece is needed

To finish the title, How large of a piece is needed for a laminate top on an Explorer?  I have been curious because interesting pieces tend to show up from time to time through the family.  What dimensions are required for a normal (strat/tele) style body, and how much larger would be needed for something big like an explorer?  I would have just called Warmoth, but I didn't learn about this piece of keen wood until today...

I got the 9 inch to centerline part on the explorer, but if you were to send in a piece of wood, what dimensions would be the minimum requirement?  For a 1/8 inch top what do you need to start with?  I suppose I'll just wait and call the folks at Warmoth, but this has been a question I have had for a while...
