For a long time I've only been playing at home, and have been using a couple of vintage Champs in a stereo rig. That's kept me pretty happy; those are great sounding little amps and they take pedals well - especially stereo pedals like my old Boss Dimension C and PN-2 Pan/Tremolo and my H&K Tube Rotsophere. But I started wanting a bigger rig I could play out with. Something that behaved similarly to my little Champs, and I figured I could get by with a lot fewer pedals than my home setup - as long as I had compression, a good OD and some minimal modulation (I like chorus and reverb, and the DC-2 Dimension C has me very spoiled, but it's a stereo pedal so I needed something else for playing mono, at least that was my thinking).
So I got an unexpected piece of client work that gave me some spending money, and I took care of both amp and pedals at once. So far I'm happy with what I got - in the amp department:
I chose a 65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue. So far I love it - when I was younger I had an old tweed Deluxe, and this one sounds as good to me as I remember that old one sounding. It sounds a lot like the Champs, but a bit more scooped with tighter bass and sparklier highs. And it takes pedals really well.
For pedals, I needed a minimal setup for carrying around, but that still gives me some options. I got a Pedaltrain mini, and put these pedals on it:
In chain order they are: Boss TU-3 tuner, Boss CS-3 Compression/Sustainer, Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive, Earthquaker Devices Sea Machine chorus, and Earthquaker Devices Ghost Echo reverb. I'll probably change out the SD-1 for another OD, but I'm happy with the rest. I've only experimented with the Sea Machine a little while so far, but I can get a chorus out of it sort of similar to the DC-2. And I like the Ghost Echo better than the verb in the amp.
So I'm a pretty happy camper. I figure now I'm in good shape for playing out in most venues I might find myself in (I might have a church gig coming up). Sorry for boring you with all this talk - just wanted to share my good fortune.
