Y'know, the local Woodworker's Supply has some really gorgeous bits of laminate that would be fun to play with. I've just never found anything good to use them for. That's a good idea. But, I don't need anything like that, being a Strat sorta guy.

That's easy.  A pickguard pickguard.  If worried about getting the pickguard pickguard scratched, there's the pickguard pickguard pickguard.  If anyone remembers, it's similar to the Gary Busey Helmet, Gary Busey Helmet Protector and Gary Busey Helmet Protector Protector.
