I am editing this post to say that they don't appear to be any worse than the schallers. I should really have compared the two before I shot my mouth off and assaintaed Hipshots charecter.. They are both equally chintzy, in all fairness to Hipshot. The guy at hipshot offered to send me a replacement tuner.

I have always thought of Hipshot as top of the line stuff as far as bass parts go.
So apparently their guitar parts are not up to par with that standard then?

Unrelated, but I'm really curious why they make a guitar version of the D-tuner, but they don't make any tuners that match it.
I think i would have to laugh out loud at the concept of pairing two different companies tuners on the same instrument.
Does anyone actually do this?

a cast and machined part literally broke while you were installing it? wow - what kind of incredible force were you using to break metal on a tuner

I can see you breaking the small rear side set screw if you didn't use a pilot hole, but breaking the tuner assembly itself sounds like a story that Coach would be telling on Survivor dude

I've installed more Hipshot tuners than I can count, and I've never had a single problem with any of them. Something's definitely fishy here

all the best,

all the best,

What broke was the tuner button set screw( locking tuners). They are very chintzy tuner button screws and they just snap-plus the tolerances are off on the tuners themselves, as one tuner fit perfectly and the other i tried was too tight. Its not the tuner holes either cause Ive had sperzels in there without any problems.

Interesting - I was thinking of using those exact tuners on a 12 string because of the extra light weight.  Your comments give me pause.

I've had other stuff from hipshot (b-benders) and have been very impressed with the quality - and I use these suckers alot.

Do you have any pics so we can see how the tuners broke?

\Actually, now that I have five installed, I like them as much as Schallers. They are of about the same qulaity looks like. I would buy them again.
I guess that little screw is just not that  thick or strong on either Schaller OR Hipshot.

I broke a tuner bushing while installing it once.  Pot metal.  It was not a name-brand part... surprised anything by Hipshot would break like that.
