Which tuner route would be the best for Hipshot locking tuners?

It would seem that the hole size for their Grip-Lock tuners is a closely-held secret. It doesn't show up on any of their pages. Seems like a pretty critical detail to leave out. Maybe they don't need holes! Maybe they're magic tuners!  :laughing7:

But, the question has come up before so emails were exchanged with the threat of strong letters to follow, and they finally admitted that a 10mm hole would be just perfect, and that a typical Schaller or Sperzel cut was fine. I've installed them in Schaller holes without getting upset, so go with that.

Be aware that Warmoth cuts their tuner holes very exactly, and the Schaller hole is 9.92mm as opposed to the 10mm Hipshot is calling out. Also, while all neck woods are very hard, some are more brittle than others, so even though .08mm is just a gnat's whisker of a difference the holes might need to be opened up a smidge. A bit of 220-320 grit sandpaper around a pencil/dowel/something to finesse the hole a bit might be in order. Wouldn't want to split your headstock.

I've used Hipshot open back, locking tuners, with Schaller tuner holes, and they fit perfectly. But I am a little befuddled. I just looked at the Warmoth page, and it appears their definition of a Schaller tuner hole has changed. The Schaller holes on the last two necks I ordered are stepped, 25/64" x 11/32", but now the Warmoth page shows a 25/64" straight bore! Appears the dedicated Schaller route has been eliminated and only the straight bored Sperzel hole is available as a standard option. The 25/64" will fit the Hipshot tuner body, but the smaller bore to closely fit the reach nut is gone. Take a look:

I do notice the following statement: "By request and at no additional cost we will ream or counter-bore the holes to fit most popular tuners with the purchase of a new Warmoth neck." So, it looks like it's now necessary to specifically request the stepped bore.

Use the Schaller holes they are the best size for Hipshots.

I used the straight 25/64" route (labelled Sperzel at the time - that's what's on my order sheet), and the Hipshot tuners fit fine.  I did find while looking around on the Warmoth website, that some places referred to the different options in slightly different ways.

Whilst they will fit into a straight sperzel hole, the two step of the Schaller hole is much closer to the actual shape of the Hipshots.

I guess that's where it gets confusing.  This page:

Shows Sperzel and Schaller as being the same (straight 25/64").

However, on the custom builder page, Schaller and Sperzel are separate options, with Sperzel being straight 25/64" and Schaller being 25/64" & 11/32".

Previously, the tuner hole page also showed a separate Schaller option, the stepped 25/64" x 11/32". Maybe Aaron can shed some light on this.

i've put Hipshot Grip Lock staggered tuners on my last three necks. They are my first choice. Can't say I like the open ones, although I've not tried them.

@KOABUILD, you are welcome. When I first had to find this information it was virtually non-existent.

Fortunately, this is why it is useful for findings to be documented to help people at a later point.

I'm also a fan of Hipsot staggered as it's what's already on my Schecter USA PT's.  They fast and great.  So is Schaller the tuning hole size to go with for Hipshots? 

Also, what's the difference between the Open and Closed Grip-locks?

Yes, they fit 10mm or 25/64th holes, so the "schaller" hole that warmoth will drill works great.

Open vs closed just means whether or not you can see the brass cog or whether it's covered up. I think the open ones look cool.

Note that the Schaller holes are now 10mm approx but previously were a stepped hole of two diameters. The Hipshots fit very well in the stepped holes, but also work in a 10mm hole.

Warmoth Schaller holes used to be of the two-step diameter variety but no longer are as a standard option but I believe they can still be requested.
