hi there,
i'm going to buy a warmoth guitar and now i'm thinking about which pick ups i should get... as you can read the subject i'd need high output. further it should be a passive PU. I'm thinking about a DiMarzio Super Distortion (DP 100) for BRIDGE position and a DiMarzio Super 2 (DP 104) for NECK position... Any Experiences??? What I'm looking for is some kind of old school metal sound (80's!)

Any other suggestions???

thanks

I have a super 3 which sounds killer in the bridge.  I also have another with the EMG 81/85 combo.  BEst sounding setup I have ever had.

The Seymour Duncan JB (mated to a 500k vol pot) was a very popular passive 80's old school metal pickup.

Harmonic Designs Z-90 for the bridge , it's a 30% overwound humbucker sized P-90 with HUGE polepieces.
It has great tone and massive signal.

I have it in one I built,
I also had the Duncan JB , among many others it's a good pickup but the Z-90 has more balls

I have a dimarzio super distortion in the bridge of my 80's style strat. it is awesome for that type of music, get it

Bill Lawrence L500XL - the "Dimebag Darrell" pickup. You can't get more 80's than that... Lynch used them too, until he got a sig deal. Make sure to get the real Lawrence, not the fake, squealing ones on Ebay from his thieving ex-partner Jzchak Wajcman. Lawrence doesn't bother to spend time suing everyone who's stolen his designs (PRS, Gibson, Ibanez, George L....), he'd be in court forever and he'd rather build new stuff (he gets a few cents from every legit humbucker made anyway, money is not a problem.)

It's fun to call him up (toll-free!) and get him gassing about the good old days, but if you ask him a technical question, you're gonna get a real technical answer... :icon_biggrin:
If you don't want a real Lawrence, spend an extra $30 and get the Seymour Duncan that he ripped off from Bill, the SH-13. Or the DiMarzio that he ripped off from Lawrence, the X2N. They're all real bright, a good thing in my mind.

AIYEE!

(are you sure about this?!?)

Never tried a Super 2, but I love my Super Distortion, Its great for everything and has a fatter, heavier sound than the JB, which is also a good pickup, I just like the Super Distortion better.

Also take a look at the BareKnuckle Pickups.  Hand made in the UK.  Large selection.  Killer sound.

If you want really high output, the Lawrence pickups or the Bare Knuckles.  Go to their forum and search for the band/song/sound you want, or ask and they will direct you to the appropriate pickup.  The most metallest pickup bareknuckles makes is the ceramic warpig.  A very good candidate for those that like to detune.  It doesn't sound so much like the 80's, but...

Now here is a thought that you might not have considered.  Try the Tone Zone (DiMarzio).  Hot pickup and killer tone.  Alternatively, even though it is considered a medium output pickup, consider the Norton.  I have both, and I also have guitars with the Super D and the X2N.  They are all great.

What I like specifically about the L500's is that they put out a flatter signal - more bass and treble than a typically-voiced pickup like most DiMarzios or Duncan. This means that using the amp & guitar controls, you have a wider range of tonal options. The "XL" is so powerful that even when it's tapped, you get a pretty credible Fenderish single-coil tone. Lawrence does all kinds of unique things with inductance that I have no understanding of, I just know that tapped, parallel or turned down halfway you still get a good clear tone. I don't play anything like Dimebag or really any 80's metal, but the notion that one pickup is only good for one thing is odd to me... most really overdriven sound actually come from the amps and effects, and the number of great-sounding guitarists using regular old JB's and PAF's and such outnumber the ones using stronger pickups. For that matter, Jerry Garcia used Super Distortions, and he had a great clean tone. The pickup itself should never distort, it just drives an amp to a certain degree.

The L-500 comes in four versions:
C = 2.8 Henry
R = 4.8 Henry
L = 6.8 Henry
XL = 9.2 Henry

I've used the R and L versions
These are great sounding pickups

I have a JB in the bridge and its definitely got the 80's metal tone.

I've also heard good things about the Tone Zone in the bridge (some people lately are also get a nice metal tone out of it in the neck).

where can I buy the L-500? I can't seem to find any legit sellers of them online, and his site is hard to navigate.

You want a shielded L500XL for $60.00 and it's $8.50 shipping... but you also call Becky at 877-647-2651 - tollfree, ask something about "inductance" and she'll put Bill on the phone and he'll talk for two hours about fixing guitars for Jeff Beck & Jimi Hendrix in 1968 London & stuff. Or you can e-mail them but that's no fun. He taught Seymour Duncan , Kent Armstrong, George L, & Larry DiMarzio how to make pickups....
