So, you may know that I planned on building a strat with a quilt maple top and black dye and maple board and all that (and string trees  :laughing7: ), but then I decided to go with a set-neck explorer from Precision Guitar Kits... Well I may still do the strat some day, but right now, I'm about a week away from ordering my explorer body and neck so yeah.

BUT THEN
I was peruzing the warmoth site and found a love for the PRS style VIP body...
So after my explorer... I'm probably going for a VIP instead of the strat. (But who knows, by then it might be a king-v or a Z...)
I just wasn't sure, do you use the curved pickup rings, or is that section flat?

Slso, I'm thinking it will be flame maple on chambered mahogany with black dye and black gloss back, a mahogany neck with ebony board and nightswan inlays, with a warmoth headstock. painted black as well. white binding on body and neck. Gotoh 510 bridge, and chrome fittings... It will be a thing of beauty.
As you may be able to tell, I like black and contrast.

since I have nothing better to do today, I did a mockup of what I'd be getting (almost to a tee)
Just replace the quilt maple with flame maple.

Both of those guitars look great to me.  Black or brown with contrast is my favorite, in a stealth or wood grain style.  But no penguin styles for me.  I like white if and only if it involves lots of fine pin stripping.  Other wise, I hate white.  I like dark a lot.  Bright, not so much.

I remember, back around 2007, ordering parts to put together a Telecaster. It was going to be my fourth and 'final' guitar; two Les Pauls, one ES-335, and a Telecaster seemed like a perfect set.

Four Telecasters, three Jazzmasters, one Stratocaster, four Les Pauls, two Les Paul Specials, a Firebird, two super-Strats, and an SG later, and I'm still ordering parts. Right now I'm thinking I need to finally make a PRS/VIP, too.

Welcome to the dark side. Abandon hope, all ye who enter here.

Yeah... haha. I could do this my whole life. I'm sure I'll find something different to do each time!
Have you kept all of those builds?

Nope. Every single one has been retooled, necks and bodies have been swapped around, etc. I still have most of the parts in use, but nothing like their original forms. No build ever ends up 100% how you expect.

... But that's just another reason to make that VIP after you're done with the Explorer. Then you gotta do that Strat. Then you'll realise you'll wish you'd tried out a different neck wood, so now you've got to make a second VIP. Then you'll have done a few bolt-ons, so time to order another kit for a new set neck, no? :icon_thumright:

We think a lot alike! I almost thought about buying a replacement neck for one of my guitars, just so I could change the wood depending on my mood...

I really like the look of that VIP, but then again.....I'm a sucker for a VIP. Maybe want to change that neck to something like a Warhead or a Strat headstock. So you can put some string trees on there.

haha, no...

But I think I might build the VIP before the explorer now. Mainly because it would be a bit less out of my pocket..
