seriously.. I don't even know what 3d printing is, but it sure looks cool :)

3d printing is so cool! It is absolutely fricking buck rogers awesome. Those are probably made of plastic, unfortunately.

If it's 3D printing, they are, by definition, made out of plastic.  Those are pretty cool bodies, if you're into that sort of thing.  Not my taste, but nicely executed.

No, unfortunately not. But mine isn't a 3D printer. And as bagman said it's done with different types of resins. Mostly for prototyping. They use a 3D cad model sent to the printer that reproduces the part from the model a layer at a time. Until you  have a finished part.

Just a nit but... 3D printing isn't 'by definition' made of plastic. It's not real practical or cost effective to build stuff out of mig welding wire, but NASA and a couple others have done it.

This is true to some effect. There are several forms of 3D printing, SLS(selective laser sintering) which uses metals as well as polymers.

FDM(fused deposition modeling) is used in traditional rapid prototyping, uses a nozzle to deposit molten polymer (i.e. ABS, PC, PC/ABS, PPSU) onto a support structure, layer by layer. FDM parts can be strengthened by wicking a metal into the part.

(LOM) laminated object manufacturing, thin layers are cut to shape and joined together (i.e. paper, polymer, metal)

So you right that it doesn't have to be plastic, but all 3 types use plastic, and it's usually the quickest way to get a tangible prototype in had fast.

Holy necropost, Batman!

This came up on Boing Boing today:

Someone's done a serious high-quality recording of one of these guitars (subject to Youtube compression, etc., etc.)

pretty cool, but I don't like the color..

They have 3D printers that make food now.  Like the replicators from Star Trek, except the food looks really unappetizing.

You can see (and customize for purchase) the ones in the earlier post from here. But, for $3500 - $4000 is a bit too much for me.
Also, to the earlier discussion, these are plastic! Their printer will do either ABS or PLA.  :guitarplayer2:
