Heavy Metal Cardboard Box

Maybe I missed something...is that supposed to be funny, or was that box really doin' that? It was, wasn't it :icon_scratch:.

Yes, at the end of the video, it says the box (and the transducer) is actually making that sound. What I find interesting is that, while it's obviously out of tune and he is not playing any recognizable song, because it's going through a big muff, he creates a passable metal/punk tone with this rubber band and cardboard box.

Which puts all of my "is this tone wood what I need to make good music" thoughts in perspective. Now, what would make this worse is if he had written a good song with it, since I haven't written any songs at all and I have equipment far more musical than a cardboard box and a rubber band.

It would appear that somebody has way too much time on their hands.

If a big muff is part of your definition of tone, then sure a cardboard box and rubber band will subtstitute nicely. Hideous thing. I have never understood the "vintage" appeal of ANY pre tube-screamer distortion pedal, and about 85% of non ts-clone pedals since.  You can also do this: take a length of pvc pipe. Fasten a moveable stopper so you can tune the resonant frequency of the pipe, then stuff the biggest hornets nest you can find down there. Enjoy.

I agree. But, back about 100 years ago when I was just a grasshopper, a Big Muff Pi was a Wonderful Thing. Amps equipped with master volumes were kinda thin on the ground, so if you wanted to sound like you were killing your amp/speakers at low volume you needed some kind of wicked distortion box. The Univox "Fuzztone" was one way of doing it, but they were so over the top and noisy it was ridiculous. Think "Satisfaction" from the Stones, or Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky". The Big Muff Pi was a cleaner (?) way of getting that distortion.
