Hate to start yet another "Pickups for my" thread, but...

I've decided to get a mahogany chambered strat in the comming year.  It'll have a Floyd Rose bridge.

I've been thinking about the Duncan Custom Custom for the bridge.  I was also thinking about the Duncan '59 Model for the neck.

Then I noticed this review of the Stag Mag:  http://www.warmoth.com/Stag-Mag-P1390C797.aspx

Does anyone have any thoughts on the Stag Mag?  This guy, Erik, mentions that neck pickups get "muddy/bassy", which I certainly notice on stock pickups.

No idea on the Stag-Mag, but I had a Custom Custom in my Strat for a while and really didn't like it.  A regular Duncan Custom is perfect for me!  Now, Felix The Strat has a Duncan Custom in the bridge and a Duncan Jazz in the neck.  I have a Magaswitch P-Model switch in it so it's wired like a PRS.

call me crazy but I put three stag-mags in my build

matters what you are plugging into. I use a podxt and a roland keyboard amp. pretty jangly on that depending on the amp model. Ive also plugged into a Dumble clone, a silverface bassman and a marshall jtm900 or 800 combo and all sounded great.

I have all three pickups with coil taps in case I want a brighter tone....

I just read Erik's review. He's on this board, look for his green flame maple strat.

Erik's review is pretty spot on. the stag mag dosnt get muddy in the neck position even though it's a 16k bridge pickup. Id like to add that I get some pretty decent twang outta them in the N+B and 2&4 positions. one thing I like to do is tap the N and B and turn on the middle full and this sounds wounderful!

What kinds of pickups would you suggest for Mahogany?  or - What kind of wood would be good w/ the custom custom?

What about Ash?

look for his green flame maple strat.
I LOVE that effing guitar!  I've noticed it for a YEAR.

I love the Stag Mag in the bridge; in fact it's the only bridge humbucker I've ever really got on with. It doesn't sound much like a traditional PAF-type though, so it might sound a bit over-bright and tinny if you're used to a standard humbucker. I have it set up so it can be split to either coil or series humbucking; splitting to the coil nearest the bridge gives a very bright twang with maybe a bit too much icepick, especially on the G string. Splitting to the coil further from the bridge gives a slightly more mellow and very useable single coil sound.

The only real problem with it is the vintage stagger, which can make the G string a bit too dominant in cleanish arpeggios and chords; it seems to be smoothed out a bit at higher gain, but it's not really a pickup for metal as it probably doesn't have enough bass and low mids.

Edit: I just read the original post again and noticed you're thinking of using it in the neck; I haven't tried this myself but I have read about other people doing it and getting good results, especially for the single coil sound. However, I prefer a more traditional humbucker like the Duncan 59 in the neck.
