Hey!!  First post...first build...I'm a newbie as it gets here!!  Anyway my son and I will be starting a little father/son project soon...a Warmoth Jagstang in swamp ash.  The body should be here tomorrow and the neck (maple/maple) probably the end of the week or first of next.

I know there is alot of work to be done but I'd like to start picking up some of the necessary hardware/electronics, etc as we do the finishing work.

Can anybody point us in the direction or provide a list of components that need to be purchased?  Pickups, switches, tuners, and potentiometers I understand...but what about everything else....truss rods...nuts, screws, control plates...etc?

Hey bud first off welcome to the forum

I like to hear about father son projects.  My first guitar way back my dad helped me out quite a bit.  He still does help, just not as much. The student surpasses the teacher so to speak...

Building it for him or you?  If it's his, every single time he looks at it or plays it you will be a part of that.  I guess that comes into play  a little later in life, if you know what I mean.  It'll mean way more to him than if you just went to guitar center and told him to pick one out and laid the CC down.  I'm sure you know what I mean by this

Ok, you aren't going to need a truss rod, it will be in the neck already if you got a turtle.

As far as incidental hardware, I would wait till the guitar and neck is in your possession.  You are goig to need a number of different fasteners like for the pickguard, to hold the PU's in, certain switches need screws.  My personal suggestion is to buy as much stainless steel hardware that you can find if you are going with chrome hardware, a little polishing to stainless will make it shine like chrome, and no rusty pickguard screws later down the line.  Sweat is hell on cheap screws.

What I am recommending you do is not to buy your little fasteners from Warmoth stew mac or anywhere else online for that matter. And really I would steer away from Lowes and the Home Depot.  Look for a mom and pop hardware store that still has little bins of single screws and bolts.  Ask pop for stainless, he should have it.  If you are having a real problem finding stainless, let me know on here or PM me here with a list of exactly what you need and I'll go to the local mom and pop hardware we still have here.  I'd be glad to help you out on this.  Because for what you will pay for stainless fasteners locally is what you will pay for junk jap scrap grade 2 fasteners from warmoth or stewmac, and the stuff you get on line as far as these little parts go is really junk.  That goes for the junk at the music shops in thier little bins, they get it from allparts or stewmac, and it is junk.  Really easy to strip screw heads and break off screws.  Since you are doing swamp ash with a maple neck, a bar of soap for each and every screw you install into that lumber is an absolute necessity.  Ash and maple both are tough to put any kind of fastener into.  Pilot drill everything!!

when you are buying pots remember these three letters CTS.  Don't buy anything else unless you like changing pots all the time!!

Oh, and just two more things:  Doug (DangerousR6)  makes custom neckplates for guitars, he does great work, a lot of us run his plates and I make wooden rear control cavity covers and tremolo covers.  So when you are looking for something a little extra special for your build, let us know!!!

Be happy to help you out with any issues

Thank you...yeah this is for my 15yr old son.  He picked out the body style and finish, etc....and he'll get to pick out the pickups when we get to that point...lots of homework to do.

I don't know what a "turtle" is but I'll take your word for it!!!  LOL

The mom and pop hardware store is genius!!!  There aren't many left but we have a few around the area.  I figured pilot drilling was an absolute necessity...the soap is a great tip too, thanks.

I will need LOTS of tips like the CTS pots.  A neckplate is just another example of hardware I don't know about...LOL....you're gonna be a busy guy helping me through this build!!!

Thanks again...and thanks many more times in advance.

I did my first guitar with my dad when I was 15.  I would work on it in shop class at school and bring it home and work on it with the old man

"The Turtle"  is my affectionate name for Warmoth.  Their logo is a turtle playing a guitar

The neckplate is the plate of metal behind where the neck attaches to the body.  Like I said, Doug 'DangerousR6' does custom engraved plates.  Send him your drawing, he mills or carves or etches or whatever it is that he does to them a design for you, a little more of a custom touch. here is a link to his thread on his neck plates:

Doug's thread has like 110 pages to it, but I'm pretty sure he posts up all of his custom work.  Contact him, he is a great guy to do business with!!  He does everything from a simple 'W' for warmoth, to some pretty artistic stuff.  I'm really happy with the one he made me, I asked for stainless, and he dug around his shop to find me a suitable piece (after he tried unsuccessfully to sell me titanium!!)

And here is a link to my wood control covers:

I started that thread with my old screen name, which I no longer use, but I am very eager to get some of my wood covers on some of these beautiful examples of musical artistry.  To me, nothing looks worse on an exotic wood guitar than an ugly black plastic control cover!!!

I'll be glad to help you out with whatever you might need.  When I first joined I was all questions, but since I've been here a while, I try to stick to helping out whomever needs it.  There are other guys on here that know their stuff too.  I just like to type I guess.

Anyway, good luck with your build!!!  post lots of pics of the whole process.  I really like to hear about the father son projects especially!!!
