So I have a poplar burl jazz bass with matching headstock and ebony fingerboard with birdseye maple back.

What colour bridge, knobs amd control plate and tuners?

I agree with Bagman. A pic would be helpful. But, both black and chrome/nickel go with anything so you can't go wrong, although chrome/nickel is common as dirt. On the plus side, chrome/nickel will take a lotta abuse before it shows wear. Some schemes can be classed up with gold, although it wears quickly.

The hardware will be a j retro pre amp (knobs and control plate), babicz bass bridge and not too sure on tuners, might go classic jazz bass style or something a little different.

I think what we're hoping for is an idea what the front of the guitar will look like.

I can't right  now as Im away but the colour that will look nice I think will be a cocobolo pickguard with gold control plate and black knobs, black bridge and black tuners.
