Guitar Neck Plate functionnal use?

Hey guys (gals if any),

I was wondering, I was about to get myself a nice custom neck plate for my project but the only material my local shop can use to get me a satin black plate is 1/8'' thick aluminum.

I was wondering, since alu is a pretty soft metal, how functionnal is the neck plate anyway? Is alu strong enough to do the job or should I look toward something harder/stronger to hold the screws in place?

Any insight on this ?

Why do you want a satin black neckplate? Assuming you mean something like black anodized aluminum, it sounds like it would look terrible.

Because that's what he wants.

Yeah that would be anodized black alu.

Any other suggestion as to get a black plate with 'metal-colo' engravings ? Stainless can't be painted good to the best of my knowledge and the paint would chip away as the CNC machine engraves it. Can't go masking the engravings either to paint it, lines would be much too narrow to do it.....

Open to suggestions...

Also, why would it look bad ? My Sperzel tuners and Hipshot bridge are allready satin black in color and the whole guitar theme is Sunburst with all black hardware...I think it'd look pretty nice.

Try to ask DangerousR6 about custom neck plates.

Ah, just nevermind line6man, he's

2: Using digital modeling for a name?

I think that Black aluminum would be nips. I don't know how it would react to the pressure, but my guess would be that at an eight inch, you're going to have a hard time warping it, especially if you have it under even tension.

L6M, I'm just joking! :icon_jokercolor:

The thing is, when I think of black anodized aluminum, I think of things like heatsink fins.
A flat square of it, I would imagine to look like a hacked up metal chassis or something.
It's a cheap look, very "industrial" for the lack of a better term.

But of course, that's just my opinion.
I can't picture any neckplate looking good if it's not plated with something. :blob7:

Well, I'm quite partial to black satin neckplates myself and they (can) look badass!

Tkx for the tip, I allready tried my luck with him (first I should say) but he wants nothing to do with replicating the Fender logo as I'd like (and I can probably understand why as he doesn't know me and all and nobody wants to take chances doing some like that over the net these days) but it's a dead end. Though I have to mention he seems like a really nice guy anyway.

The think is, the OEM Fender neck plates are 1/16'' thick (just found out), alu sure won't cut it then this thin. Anybody knows what Dangerous's plates are made of? How thick they are ?

Yeah this guitar has amazing aesthetics.

Like I said, satin black will be all over the guitar anyway so I don't worry about that.

I just gotta find a way to get a decent hard enough plate to get the design on.

1st, the neck plate is just to distribute the screw load. Washers work fine. Nylon would work.

2nd, another option might be to buy one of the Fender plates and give it an oxide black finish. A gunsmith or machine shop could probably do this for you.

(Btw I wonder how parkerizing would look on a guitar. Hmm )

That was my first idea but Fender don't sell the 'Custom Shop' ones with the wing and the Fender logo without the official serial number already on it......an I can perfectly understand why. I want my own serial number on it, like CINITIALSBIRTHDATE01 but with the whole OEM Fender vibe.

I hate it, I always get those nice (I think) ideas that turn out like hell to get done lol

The plates I use are a mild steel, and are usually 3/32 thick.
