in the case of say.... a Gibson SG special faded, or the back of a LP Std faded... yes you can. Just be prepared to keep the grain fill very smooth on application (scrape it!) and be prepared to color match the existing finish if you sand some off (unless you're going to overspray with an opaque color).
Sure, sometimes when you do final wet sanding/buffing on a lacquer finish you can get little chips/blemishes that need filling with clear filler. What are you using this on? Have a picture?
