http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6zYm3A2rrw Their album "In the Dark" always creeps up in my rotation. As far as the all-important authenticity vs. poseur horror - Vanduran G. Brandin is one of the three steel guitarists who created the "Spongebob Squarepants" ouvre! Can't beat that with a stick... a 6'6" pintail stick....

I've even wondered if the classic Dead tune "Dark Star" isn't at heart, an ultimate surf extension. It sure ain't da blooze. We can all bless our lucky Jerrys for that!

Great point you make. I put this in the "Post Rock" column, which has a LOT in common with surf, even if the speed and intensity are down a little, and you repeat stuff enough for a 10 minute song that would have lost the surf crowd in 3 minutes.
What I'm trying to write is exactly that stuff in the middle.
So over da blooz.
