Going to BERLIN

I am going to Berlin this week.  My 1st time out of the USA.  Any recomendations?  I am staying at the Hilton Berlin... :occasion14:

1 - get out of the hotel and go to all the cool neighborhoods that you can.
2 - check out where the wall was.  There likely is a beer hall or two there now.
3 - check out the architecture, especially on the 'eastern' side - there are some very cool, but kinda scary, Nazi era buildings that are fascinating.

and

4 - get a flight case for the guitar  :headbang:

Plan on very relaxed lunches, some nice Berlinerweiss and do not expect the waitresses to dote on you.  They give you your food and beer then expect that you will be there a few hours enjoying conversations with your friends.

Enjoy the beautiful countryside.

- use public transport
- avoid "döner kebab" (turkish style fast food) unless you have a recommendation for a specific one. Too many shops in berlin, little quality because of stiff competition. Quality suffers.
- check out "Friedrichshain" and "Prenzlauer Berg" for the student-left wing-alternative-ex east flair (see jackthehack's link http://www.whitetrashfastfood.com/ <- that's in Prenzlauer Berg, for example)
- check out "Mitte" for the "new" and posh Berlin with its shops and government buildings, but there's your hotel anyway
- go to Potsdam, vistit Schloss Sanssouci to get away from the hustle and bustle in Berlin
- try Currywurst
- if you are interested in German-German history, visit the former Stasi-Prison Hohenschönhausen besides the obivous visits to the Wall and Checkpoint Charlie

If you like modern architecture as well: visit Berlin Central Station, one of Europe's newest and largest train stations.

And also Zoo Station In Berlin is very famous, not only for the U2 song, but a book written about the time of Berlin underground life in the 1970s....

In Germany, a lot of places measure beer by the litre.  Get two and be sure to have someone take a picture of you holding your 2L of beer.  Then drink them!

More fun if the pictures are taken after drinking 2 Litres of beer! :occasion14:

Be sure and have the Flammkuchen (sp?), there are places right on the river you can sit for a long time and just enjoy. I was there last June during the World cup. So fantastic and the food was phenomenal.
I recommend going to Pottsdam too.

You need before and after pictures, really.  Somewhere I have a picture of me holding my 2L.

Sounds like my kind of serving size for beer. 2 litres is just shy of a 6 pack of 12 ouncers. Of course, it would be warm as piss by the time I got to the bottom of it, but they serve it that way in the first place over there, don't they?

And make sure you try the wine.  Germany makes some great reds....

+1 to the Flammkuchen

and remember pork is almost considered a vegetable...
