Gloss over satin?

Hey guys -

Moving along on my strat project, finishing the body. It's an ash body with lots of nice grain, I'm doing a butterscotch blond finish.  Not sure if my grain filler dried and shrunk or what, but I'm now at the clear coat stage and I'm finding altar I still need to do a lot of flat sanding and re lacquer ing to get a nice flat finish.

Anyway I ran out of gloss lacquer last week. Have got some more cans coming but they won't be here till Friday. :-/. However I did discover that I had a mostly full can of satin finish lacquer.

I thought maybe while I was waiting for the gloss to show up I can do a few coats of satin and sand down again, then do my final coats with gloss as I was planning all along. Any downside to this? Basically filling up the grain holes with the satin, and there will probably be a bit left under the gloss too.

Thanks!

I wouldn't do that. "Satin" finishes have a "flattener" ingredient that breaks up the light reflection. It won't hurt anything, but if you sandwich some of that in there, you may end up with something that looks a bit dull or foggy unless viewed at an angle.

Patience always pays when dealing with finishes. Use the right things with the right processes at the right times. Cheaters never win.

Yup. And since the body is going to be sitting for a few days, be sure to clean the thing up with some naphtha and wipe it down with a tack cloth before you start shooting anything new. It's absolutely amazing how particles so tiny you can't even see them turn into boulders under a fresh layer of finish, then you have to fight with smoothing those out.
