George Lynch wiring style?

Hi guys

While thinking about the endless pick-up/wiring combinations I could use on my (wanna do) Warmoth built one in particular came to my mind: the George Lynch wiring style with 1 humbucker (B) + 1 single (N) connected to a push/pull volume pot (500k) to swith between neck and bridge. Did someone of you ever used such kind of wiring? I love the idea of having as less stuff as possible on the guitar top (rear rout) and as much exposed wood as possible but... is it comfortable to use a push/pull (or push/push) pot as switch? (Before you ask the bridge hum would be a JB and the single a DiMarzio Cruiser so the 500k pot will be good for both). Thanks for the help  :)

A push/pull is nowhere near as comfortable to use as a switch, imo. You can make it better by using a knurled Tele-style knob. Pulling a strat knob out can be nigh-on impossible.

Another option is to use a Fender S-1 switch, which looks nice, is easy to use, and is a bit too expensive really but you might not care.

I agree with Jumble Jumble that the push-push or push-pull switch is more cumbersome than toggles or blades. In addition to that, those pot-mounted switches have notoriously short lifespans, and the knobs have a tendency to loosen up over time until they won't stay on the pot's shaft. They're ok for switching options you'd rarely use, but for going between the only two pickups on the guitar I suspect you'd tear the thing up in no time.

Yeah, guys, I think you're right, specially on the "overstressing the knob more than it's supposed to be" thing... probably it's much better to stick with the old trusty usual switch :) Thanks for the help!

Eh, I have two guitars wired this way, though using push-push and a Fender S-1 instead of push-pull. Had them going for a few years, yet to have any problems other than the first one I made used an older style of Alpha switch, back when they used really loose-feeling pots; sometimes I'd accidentally knock it quieter while pushing it, so in the end I disconnected the pot element and now it's only function is to switch pickups. Newer Alpha pots, JS pots, EMG, CGE and CTS pots, all have a stiffer feel so you can use those as both a switch and as a volume or tone, without fear of accidentally shifting one part while working the other.

There's really no drawbacks to it, if you're sure you won't miss the middle selection, and it is quicker than using a blade or toggle switch, at least if it's below your picking hand. Just gotta slap the top of it and you've switched pickups, switches don't get any quicker than that. Above, I'd only ever use a Gibson-style toggle.

Then again, I am the sort of person that has guitars with literally no controls on them at all, so I'm always going to be in favour of simplicity.
