Gecko rehab

Finally had some time begin refinishing the Gecko I bought a few weeks ago as seen in this thread.  Today I killed my arms sanding off the reddish-brown stain down to fresh Swamp Ash. If the weather holds, I'll start the finish tomorrow.

I also ordered some chrome knobs from Mojotone since I was already ordering parts for the upcoming Jazzcaster-ish build.

After two applications of paste finishing wax. I'll reassess tomorrow, but I think I'll do at least one more before calling it good.

Thanks.  As much as I didn't like the stain that was on it, it really soaked into the more open grain and is helping to make it pop with the clear finish.

That can be a really nice effect of pre-staining ash, actually.  I had good luck hitting the front of a body with India ink and sanding way back - the black grain looked awesome (or at least, I thought it did, if it's too unseemly to make such a declaration as regards one's own work).

Of course, I managed to screw it up eighteen other ways, and eventually gave up on the body.  But I'll return to the pre-dyeing idea next time I go after an ash body.

After many delays, and a lack of motivation for the project, I finally got around to putting this gecko together today.  Unfortunately, after getting everything assembled and wired up, I learned the hard way that the D'Addario ECB81-5SL flats are juuuust a bit too fat for the factory nut from Warmoth...  The part of the nut above the B string went ricocheting across the room while I was bring it up to tune.

Time to look into getting a replacement nut cut to size.
