today i was listening to modern lovers 'pablo picasso' - that is a funny song especially sung in such a serious voice.

likewise when i listen to zappa's dinah mo hum, it never fails to get a laugh out of me. yea zappa is funny most times - bawdy though.

bo diddley is funny too with his shaggy dog stories.

so who/what gets a laugh out of you?

ANYTHING by Steel Panther, parody hair-metal band. actually really good musicians. singing about fat girls  :icon_thumright:

I would have to say Robert Earl Keen.  The guy has such great delivery when talking to the crowd, the songs are really good songs, and there are quite a few funny ones as well.

Hi-Standard's cover of the Green Acres theme. The way the Japanese woman sings "Goodbye, city life!" cracks me up every time. Not in a condescending way, just... because.

"B*tch Betta Have My Money" by AMG. I taught the refrain to my chiropractor's receptionist, since she is always good at telling me when the 1st of the month is here and I better have her money.

On a conceptual level, Mastodon's Leviathan album. It tickles me to think of a heavy metal concept album based on Moby Dick, often told from the whale's point of view. If some metal kid actually reads Moby Dick in English class, then even better.

More specifically, Brent Hinds' banjo roll @ 1:20 in "Megalodon" from the same record.

Jason and the Scorcher's land-speed-record version of "Gospel Plow" on Wildfires and Misfires.

Every time I hear Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight" at a wedding/prom/etc. when people have no effing clue that the song was intended to be completely ironic.

The Toy Dolls' cover of "Nellie the Elephant."

Oh, and CC Deville's guitar solo on that live Poison record.

Well, the obvious would be people like Weird Al and Tom Lehrer, but if we're talking about semi-serious music:  Just about everything by Ween is hilarious.  Belle & Sebastian have a lot of funny songs too in my opinion.  Some of the songs on the Andrew Bird jazz albums totally crack me up, especially "Greenland" and "A Drinking Song in the Grand Style".  Sufjan Stevens doesn't really write funny songs, but his song titles are funny, like "They Are Night Zombies! They Are Neighbors! They Have Come Back From the Dead! Ahhhhhh!!!", and "Did I Make You Cry on Christmas? Well, You Deserved It!".  He also writes hilarious liner notes and essays on his website.  Oh, and of course The Decemberists have some great humor in their songs.  I especially enjoy their "My Mother Was a Chinese Trapeze Artist" and the line about being lost by a bunch of prostitutes to a blind brigadier in a game of "high stakes canasta".  And Gogol Bordello makes me laugh because they are so... insane.

One of the whole reasons I got into Dylan as a teenager (and he was NOT cool or even retro cool in the mid 80s) was because he was so funny on his early records. Talking WW3 blues, I shall be free, Motorpsycho nightmare come to mind. I love a good shaggy dog story.
