Guitar building fun... :icon_biggrin:

Sweet, I was doing this yesterday too.  How do you get the wood textures on there?  Do you need to be in an assembly instead of a part or something?  I only made a one piece body since that's what I'm going to be building next.

being a well seasoned CATIA user, I really wanted to go SolidWorks for my guitar business. Unfortunately I was unable to obtain an employee discount, and at list price there's no way I could afford a seat of SW plus a CAM package to run the CNC. If I ever find a deal on a commercial license I'll definitely be giving it serious consideration

all the best,

R

Just created the 3D model then added the wood finish with the appearances and scenes tab...

Never used Catia, it's pretty popular though our R&D uses it along with Pro E and now SW. But no it isn't cheap, if your a full time student you can usually lease a seat for a year fairly cheap. I've been working on a 3D project on my CNC at home. The 3D cam program I have uses STL files, so SW has been a big help to me there..

wouldn't work for me - our license department would drop me a nastygram asking how I was working full-time while considering myself to be a full-time student. I can use our company products for free so long as I never use any of the created data for commercial purposes. it's this use clause that was leading me to purchase a commercial seat, and how I learned that our company doesn't offer employee discounts on our own software products.  :dontknow:

So Doug....

Can you do a starcaster with that thing?
Sure can Trevor, I'll see if I can find a good pdf file of one, those seem to work pretty good for translating into cad..

I have been trying to do this for a long time! I use solidworks all the time to draft up neck pockets and bridge hole templates and stuff, but I have never figured out how to do curves properly.

What tools do you use for the sides and stuff?

On the guitar bodies I convert a pdf file of the body to a dxf....Then import the dxf into sw to create the 3d model..

Doug, that is brilliant, but don't forget the WRHB pickup routes.  Good lord, I am going to spend more money aren't I...
Patrick

And Trevor will cry... :laughing7:

I am not sure about the pseudo parkay top, but the TOM and the WRHB's are awesome.  Ugh, time to start saving more...  And during the holidays...

I thought the pseudo parkay was a nice touch, kinda gives it that "Barn Door" feel... :laughing7:

Is a starcaster arched on the top and back? My Epiphone Dot has a slight arch on the back as well.

I believe the a Starcaster is arched, or a carved top and back...
