Hi gang!  Finishing my first solo build (Tele style blackguard with maple neck) and the frets have this lacquer over them.

What is the best advice for removing?  Thanks!

0000 synthetic steel wool  will work nicely
something like this http://www.amazon.com/3M-10119NA-Synthetic-Steel-Super/dp/B00004Z4AE

Thanks!  Off to the stores when they open!  And I'm still a neck pickup away from pics  :icon_thumright:

Thanks again!

I've also seen people use a finger nail as the finish is usually pretty thin, or a penny with a groove filed in it.

You'll prob'ly want to mask the fretboard before you start scouring away at it, yes?

Y'all rock and thanks.  I needed to brush up on a tunes before rehearsal today and missed the store.  But last night I realized that the goop had come off when playing it.  So I kept on playing it.  Most came off.  Some didn't.  Then I used my fingernails and they worked for most of the rest.  But had a few sticklers so for them I have a tiny screw-driver like for reading glasses and I softly encouraged it.

I'll admit now that I didn't realize there was a covering when I installed the neck/strings.  :toothy11:

Thanks for the help, dudes!  :guitarplayer2:

Leo used a large nail with a little crescent "bite" out of the head to take the finish off.  They may still do that to this day at Fender.

Gotta love that practical approach to a Tele!

Figured my tiny screwdriver would be okay!

Thanks, CB and all!  Oh, and a pic is going up now!

I would just like to comment, EVERY guitarist needs a blackguard. If you can't make a blackguard sound good, you need to quit.
