Frank zappa pickups

I am about the biggest FZ fan out there. I pretty much listen to him solely. But here's my problem. I can't find what pickups he used! I know he used a dual sound and I play with one of those but I want to know what he had in his SGs in the 70s. He also had a humbucker with like 10 or so poles on each side. Does anyone know what it is? A carvin of some sort?

Zappa was an unreconstructed gear wh0re.  He picked up one of EVERYTHING.  He was a Carvin endorser, which suggests he probably had some of their pickups installed at some point. The Carvin gimmick is 11 adjustable pole pieces per coil, which sounds like what you are describing.

Gibson and the Zappa estate are flogging a Roxy-replica SG here, which might give you at least one of the countless variations he employed:

He also sometimes employed a +18dB preamp, so that might be fun to look at.

The MXR 6 band EQ pedal has +/-18dB cut/boost, which is outrageous. I had one at one time, but couldn't use it much because it was so noisy.

EDIT: Apparently, there's a new version of the thing that's not as noisy.

I remember seeing a picture of Frank holding a cherryburst Les Paul Custom in the Carvin Catalog and it had a Carvin M22 in it.

Good luck on your pursuit!
