For the mahogany, anyway. Transtint dyes. About 50/50 Red Mahogany and Lemon yellow, in the poly. Made a little bottle of the stuff. It creates a nice "vintage amber" version of a red mahogany look, if you know what I mean. I love putting the dye directly into the poly. Every coat of poly makes my test piece a little darker, and when I hit the darkness that I want, I can switch over to clear poly. So I've pretty much abandoned the idea of an oil finish. I just think the poly looks better, and I'll be able to finish the guitar in a few days instead of a month.
For the Koa, I'll just do clear poly, although I might give it a very light coat of Burgandy gel stain. A little purple goes nice in the koa. Just wipe it off quick, and sand it back a little so it's not TOO obvious. I'd just want it as a highlight rather than a dominant color.
I may still do a coat or two of oil on the back of the neck. Jury's still out on that.
