It has become increasingly obvious that the forum's language filter is not only ineffective, but insulting and pointless. What possible harm could come from turning it off? The worst thing that could happen is we're able to communicate more naturally and effectively.

Vote early, and often!

I see what you did there. Made all the options the same to give us an illusion of choice. :dontknow:

That's how professional political pollsters do it. Heads I win, tails you lose.

I did leave a sort of backhanded out, though.

I agree with Cagey! (oh mi)

As for cuss words I don't think that will be a severe problem - else ban the offenders!

As for the censuring of certain words and letter combinations normally associated to a well know firm in the music world. Well - can't say I'm a legal expert - but grow a pair anyway! It's just ridiculous that we can't even mention certain body shapes on this board.

:rock-on:

Sometimes (actually, often) litigants make outrageous claims and threats to pad out a complaint that have no basis in law just to intimidate the defendants. It's the old "ask for the stars in the hopes of getting the moon" trick. A sensitive defendant may take all the points seriously, and over-react in the interest of erring on the side of safety because even when you're right, it's expensive to defend yourself. It doesn't take much to destroy a small business, so it seems wise to kowtow. Principles cost a lot of money. That may be what's happening here. They're going above and beyond the call of duty with the appeasements in the hope that the ogre will go far, far away.

Here in Denmark we would have ripped the horns off - then a laugh and and a beer.

Having been here for several years, I don't anticipate any abuse of free speech. The members here are all adults with a broad enough vocabulary and writing skills that are developed enough that they don't need to resort to profanity to make a point. But, every once in a while, some colorful language is handy to intensify something, or add humor.

I've run several forums over the last 10 years or so, and never used filters. Didn't need to. They didn't attract the type of people who couldn't express themselves without cussing. Sometimes you got some words in here or there where it seemed natural or necessary enough, but overall they were pretty clean. I certainly would have never filtered standard language at all, no matter who thought they "owned" the words.

Worst case, if someone is offended by another member's communications skills, they can always put them on "ignore" so they don't have to see those posts. It's silly, but the option is there for those who are highly sensitive. That way, only the occasional oddball has to suffer rather than the whole community.

I don't know if it's still available or not. Not sure why it was ever off. I do remember some complaining about it when it got turned on. I didn't understand the argument - if you don't want to use it, don't. What's so hard about that? In any event, if it's off now it could be turned on easily enough.

I don't mind the word filter, as I still get the context, and even think it's funny.  The ignore function was ridiculous.  I don't know how anyone would read a thread with continuity with the ignore member functional active without clicking unignore anyway, which rendered it useless.  If one was not ignoring anyone or being ignored, it made for redundant posts due to the people ignoring each other making the same point.  Besides, when we did have it, the person doing most of the ignoring was using it to self impose intellectual superiority, and ended up being banned.  IIRC, the ignore function went away with the latest format change.

I thought much of the problem was that the language filter was already severely limited.

Shut your sweetwater mouth, you ice cream cat

Wait, wasn't "sweetwater" one of the words that used to get replaced, because of one of one particularly amusing syllable?

Yes. And that grouping of letters is still replaced if used on its own, but not if it shows up as part of a word. It would seem somebody's been brushing up on their RegEx syntax.

It's not used much. In fact, you rarely see it included in filters because it's used so infrequently. But, because of that it has more shock value than it deserves, particularly among the hyper-sensitive.

We use it quite a lot in London - here, though, it rhymes with "cat" rather than with "pot" which is how you guys seem to say it.
