Seems like most of you guys and gals play passive pickups, but a few of out there dig the battery power too.
Every once in a while a confounding problem surfaces. This one's a case study for y'all.

I do some minor repair work for some players in my town. One guy brought me a Fernandez strat with an EMG in the bridge and the Sustainer pickup in the neck. His sound was cutting in and out. He thought it was the output jack.

It wasn't the output jack. That thing was SOLID. So I opened her up and discovered some broken solder joints. I stuck those suckers back on, and played it. Still a "cu  ng ou of the si  al tha  wa   eally nnoying!"  Lieterally every solder joint was nicely done and surely connected. I compared it to my trusty V and Viper and there were no more errors to be found. I took out the battery and put it on my fancy battery tester...looks just like a tounge! I got a good jolt, so...What the h-e-double hockey sticks?

WELL...this guitar has the battery box next to the main control cavity. The clip that holds the battery terminals looked fine too. so...What's the problem? I actually took a razor to the vinyl cover on the terminal clips and discovered that one of the wires had been frayed and was no longer fully connecting to the terminal. Depending on what position you had the guitar, it would make contact or separate. I replaced it and VIOLA (pronounced VAHOLAH) no more cutting in and out!

I just wanted to share the experience/frustration with y'all. If this ever happens to you, hope this helps!

Thanx for the heads up on that sort of problem.  :headbang1:

Hey Yea!  I had this happen to an old DOD pedal I had (Distortion +).  Same problem, same solution.

Those cheap battery terminals are sometimes, er, cheap!  :glasses10:
