Floyd Rose + Graphtech graphite nut/locking tuners =?

i've thought about this too. but my experience with locking tuners is that they don't help keep you in tune all that well. not that they can't keep tune, but don't seem to keep tune better than plain old tuners. they make string changes a breeze, add a bunch of weight to your headstock, but don't seem to keep tune better than the SG38's i have. there was an old ibanez (either a Roadstar or RG, can't remember) that had a floating trem and no locking nut. i think it was an artist's signature guitar a long time ago, but i can't remember who to save me. this idea might work, but i'd be deathly afraid of touching the tremolo myself :-\

When I worked at Warmoth, we had a beater guitar in the office consisting of a soloist body, strat neck, schaller mini locking tuners, corian nut, floyd bridge.

With a straight string path to the tuner post, and a well performed professional setup, it can work flawlessly.  This particular guitar got lots of wammy abuse & stayed in tune flawlessly.

As I said above, the straight string pull, and a well performed professional setup work hand in hand.  Part of that setup involves a very well prepared nut.  If these processes are not performed with each other in mind, desired results can be reduced significantly.

With that being said, I've played EB/MM JPM's that have stayed in tune flawlessly, and some that could not stay in tune at all, same with Ibby Jems.

Best advice if you plan on having any type of floating trem (with or without a locking nut) , have it professionally setup if you are not skilled & experience to do it yourself.

The Floyd nut does 2 things.  It prevents friction in a standard nut by taking it out of the equation and prevents strings from falling off of the nut with the severest of severe dive bombs.  If neither of these things are issues, then theres nothing that says it has to have a locking nut.

It would look "off" though and the fine tuners would be superfluous.  That being the case, a recessed Wilky could fit the bill.

Locking tuners WILL help you stay in tune better than standard tuners.

But you need to have a nut that doesn't stick the strings. And you need to lock the strings down and bring to pitch with less than 1 wrap on the post

The standard tuners with multiple wraps are the culprit of going outta tune. as you relax the strings with your trem. the strings tend to want to unwrap from the post, like a watch spring, and hence cause the string to go outta tune.

However, theres a way to wrap your strings that minimizes the un wrapping effect on normal tuners, Theres a video out there somewhere that shows how to wrap a string,

Not a video, but pictures anyway  http://www.fretnotguitarrepair.com/stringing.htm

I have to agree with Brother Super Gary, I love Floyds and have a lot of them, but the Locking Tuners + Graphite Nut (or even better LSR) + Recessed Wilky is a great alternative for a floyd rose.
