Fitting pickups without using pickup rings on a rear-route

This might be an obvious question, but I'm not entirely sure how it's done....

If you're fitting pickups to a rear-routed guitar, and NOT using pickup rings, how do you physically fix the pickup into position?
Do the screws that would normally go through the pickup rings go directly into the body's pickup cavity?

Is this something that Warmoth need to know before they route the pickup cavities?

Thanks

I've used the bass pickup mounting screws that Warmoth sells to mount the pickups with foam from the pickup boxes rolled up and acting as a spring underneath the pickup.

Yes, you have to tell Warmoth that you want "To Wood" Humbucking routs and make sure they repeat that back to you at the end of the order so that it isn't forgotten. That keeps the plunge routs on the floor of the rout from being done leaving wood to screw into.

Thanks for the reply.
Are all pickups directly mountable? ie. I'm looking at a set of Suhr HSH pickups.....all Suhr Standards have the pickups directly mounted, so I'm guessing it's possible with these pickups...

So long as the pickups mounting tabs can slide over the mounting screws, and also fits in the rout there shouldn't be a problem.

It may be necessary to drill the screw holes on the pickups to a larger size to accomodate the wood screws...

Or you could get smaller screws.  Drilling out the screw holes will kill resale value of the pickup.

I would use a small metal plate 90 degrees off, fixed to the original leg bottom with the original screw hole (nut) and then use single coil screws in the new plate.

I would also determine the right height once and then make a small block of wood as a spacer and screw directly into that. Will definitely sound better than resting on foam or springs.
