First Post and First Warmoth Purchase--Just a general question

First, apologies if this post doesn't belong in this thread (this is my first time posting at this forum).

Just a general question: I ordered my first custom neck ever, and wanting to avoid the obvious, I put together some elements that I can't be certain will work in a "real life" application. Because of that, I have what I think are very natural anxieties (though "anxieties" might be too strong a word).

Have any of you had a similar experience? If so, any words of advice?

Welcome to the forum.

Difficult to comment on the choices you have made as you haven't listed them ?

But the design process of choices is part of the fun. You can spend ages researching and deciding but at some point you have to make a choice.

But as someone once said. "If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice"

What were the choices, and then we can perhaps comment more wisely...

Thank you for the reply and the welcome.

Alright, here were my choices. The ones I'm confident about are 1 5/8" nut width and 12" radius.
The "sketchier" selections: mahogany neck (I know maple is the default, and there's probably a very good reason for that, but my thinking at the time I finally said, "Okay, just do it" was that, if I was going to go custom, I might as well go for something unique. You know, go big or go home. So, again, mahogany neck.
Kingwood fingerboard with no inlay.
Black Corian nut.
Vintage Modern construction.
6230 fret wire.

I'll be attaching this to a Cabronita clone.

Thoughts?

That sounds like a lovely neck. Mahogany is by no means unusual for the neck material, Les Pauls and SGs have them. And anyway - Warmoth wouldn't sell you a neck made of a wood that didn't make a good one. They have a warranty to honour!

Sounds fine to me--I'm more than happy with the mahogany necks I've gotten from Warmoth.

To say they do quality work is an understatement, every piece I have ever received from them has been top notch.

Breathe easy, and welcome to the forum!

:headbang:

Sounds fine to me too.

What body and pickups have you planned for it ?

This is the great thing you don't have to stick with maple. But as the others have said mahogany is a fairly standard wood on non F guitars.

I'm planning to attach the neck to this body--which is the risky thing. It has an alder body and as of right now two TV Jones Powertrons. I've been thinking, though, that I might replace the neck pickup with a Fender Fidelitron (a pickup that surprised me) or a TV Jones SuperTron.

I am sure mahogany will look fine against that blue. And sound wise you will know soon. It may sound a little warmer than the maple according to "traditional" logic.

Enjoy the process, and you can always think about swapping bodies and necks in the future, if you want to.

Again, thank you.
I do know that there are many valid reasons for something becoming conventional wisdom (i.e. maple neck w/ ebony/rosewood/maple fingerboard), that it's not merely a matter of people just following the herd.
This might be a big lesson in not trying to reinvent the wheel.
BTW, I submitted the order last evening. When do they confirm the order?

It should not take too long for the order to be confirmed. It may be just after the Festive break they may have a few things to catch up on, but I cant say 100 %

Mahogany is a great neck wood.  Here's what the back of my strat neck looks like.

I love the look of that. Thank you for posting the picture. You have erased all my doubts.
Thanks again.

Thank you!

(Great forum, btw.)

It can become an addiction. When you get your first part(s) and realize you can finally have exactly what you want exactly the way you want it, you want it all. Warmoth is a rare breed: a trustworthy supplier. Once you're confident that you don't have to worry, the world opens up. You say to yourself "I want a guitar thus and so" and it's doable. No more compromise, it's all up to you. Plus, you get to take a certain amount of credit for what you end up with.

It's just too much fun. And like parachute jumping, snowmobiling or falling in love, once is not enough.

Your lights are on, but you're not home. Your mind is not your own. Your heart sweats, your body shakes. Another kiss is what it takes. You can't sleep, you can't eat. There's no doubt, you're in deep. Your throat is tight, you can't breathe. Another kiss is all you need. MIght as well face it, you're addicted to love!
