Just about ready to get started on my first build. Nervous? Yes, Excited? Definitely, going broke? Start the countdown :-\

So here are the plans

Body is a 2 piece mahogany from Warmoth
Top is a 3/8" spalted maple
Haven't decided on neck yet, I'd like to build my own but there are a lot of additional tools I would need!
If I build my own I'd like to go with rosewood neck and ebony fretboard
Hips hot bridge
Emg 81/85 or bareknuckles.....Idk yet :dontknow:
I will post more as I make progress but right now I'm waiting on a spindle sander to work on my templates

Look forward to seeing the build progress.

A tip for the thread would be to host your photos on Photobucket or similar and link to them in the thread with the IMG tags. They show up a lot better like that.

Thanks for the tip I'll have to set that up when I get home.

A little progress, I got the maple sealed and stabilized with Epoxy thinned with denatured alcohol, I just need to sand back to the wood now, maybe changed the design in the body also, what do you guys think?

That piece of lumber is gorgeous.  Not a fan of pointy-horned guitars, but that's not your problem, it's mine.  It does look like you're being thoughtful about your approach, which is more likely to result, ultimately, in happiness.

That squared-off neck pocket looks like either (a) a Telecaster-style pocket, or (b) a full-custom job.  Recognize that Strat- and Tele-style routing templates are easy to come by, while creating something new from scratch is likely to be more difficult and possibly more costly.  Just somethin' to think about.

Yeah the figure really popped with the epoxy!
Patience is a virtue right? Lol
I would not be against a pre-designed neck pocket, it is going to be a 7 string though so I'd need to take that into consideration.
I could still use a pre-designed neck pocket and have a bit of a custom heel right?

I should think you could find a sympathetically-minded crowd over at the sevenstring forums at http://www.sevenstring.org/

They have a reputation among the cognoscenti around here (not me, but Stubhead says so) for being a mature and helpful lot over there.

I bet folks on that board who "roll their own" would support a would-be builder such as yourself.  Not that we would withhold any of our own suggestions and opinions, but it would make sense to check in with those who have special knowledge in the field you're exploring.

Peace

Nice, I love spalted maple... :headbang1:

I did the same thing, bought a slab of spalted maple and built a tele...
DejaVooDoo-3.jpg

I filled the spalt with CA first and leveled it out. Then 2 part 2 ton epoxy. Leveled and polished...
