Hey guys,

I'm gathering information for my first warmoth build and i've become intrigued with the idea of choosing a neck wood that i can leave unfinished (it seems people really dig that direction).

Would an unfinished (or lightly oiled) neck look odd with a clear-coat finished body?  I'm still debating whether to do a clear-coat or oil DIY finish for this first build but wondering if i went with an unfinished neck whether that would limit that option.

Thanks kindly

No, not if the neck is made of exotic wood..
actually, bodies are rarely left unfinished, so it doesnt look odd at all..

Not odd at all.  If you think about it, even on the factory made mass produced guitars, only those with Maple fretboards have a finished fretboard anyway.  Head on, you're used to seeing a finished body with unfinshed Rosewood or Ebony fretboard.  It wouldn't be much of a stretch to see an unfinished neck.

I am in the process of building a padauk body tele with a padauk neck.  I'm on m 6th coat of Tru oil on the body.  It looks amazing so far.  I'm almost considering putting one coat of tru oil on the neck just based on how nice tru oil on padauk looks.  Anyone care to talk me out of it?

My MusicMan BFR Axis has a birdseye maple neck with rosewood fretboard.  MusicMan is known for awesome necks and mine is a good example.  MusicMan uses a Birchwood CaseyTru Oil Gun Stock finish & wax which feels like its unfinished.  It does require maintenance over the long-term, including reapplying the finish & wax after cleaning.

Both of my Warmoth guitars were built with unfinished maple necks.  I applied the Tru Oil finish.  Warmoth considers this to be a finish and, thus, my warranty remains in tact.  There is nothing better IMO than a Tru Oil finish on neck woods that require a finish.
