fake fenders

I agree man all I was saying was that not many people have the money to experiment with brands they are unfamiliar with. Regardless of how superior X brand might be to Shure, if you have never heard or used X brand then it's a total shot in the dark. Shure make consistently good mic's, if I want that sm57 colouring on my sound I know getting a Shure will give me that sound. Where as something like the T-bone sm57 copy is inconsistent, I used 3 unbranded sm57 copies of the same model and 1 Shure sm 57, the sm57 delivered that typical sound I expect, the other 3 had noticeable differences in the high frequencies between them. So unless I know X-brand to be consistently good then I would refuse to offer up the cash for a hit or miss.

That's certainly true enough. Get burnt, and the money's gone while you're left trying to get what you knew you wanted in the first place.

Everybody knows that $4,000 guitars sound better than $400 guitars.

Like, TEN TIMES BETTER!   dude. :icon_scratch:

Hm.... not sure why that made me think of this line, but ...

No matter how hard they try, nine women working together cannot deliver a baby in one month.

Hehe! Good line. Have to remember that one. So many techno-pundits, marketing weenies and clueless managers who've never read "The Mythical Man-Month" are always talking about how software developers need to work harder on parallelism in order to take advantage of the multi-core processors that are so ubiquitous now, not realizing that it's not that nobody wants to do it, but that many problems simply can't be solved that way.

Is no one seriously going to suggest building a custom instrument?  With a maple/maple neck and poplar or basswood body (there's also some cheaper bodies on eVILbay), and pickups & hardware from GFS, one could easily get away with a custom instrument for around or even less than $500.

Depending on how big her fingers are/her preferences, you could build her a mustang or jagstang (or short scale strat) with PAFs that would sound pretty kick @$$....

I'm actually a little bummed myself that my nephew isn't a guitar player - I'd love to build him a custom Mustang or Jaguar on the cheap.

How old is she? I know that you're looking for a guitar that will have the "WOW" thing going - hence "Fender" - she doesn't want to feel as though you bought some random pawnshop beater. However, in that price range I think that Ibanez and particularly Schecter are making some really great guitars, with better quality all around. I don't mean "OK for a student for a while", I mean great... the reason I ask about age is because if she's heading off to high school soon, I'd bet at least half the guitar players she meets will either be playing Ibani or Schecters or wish they were. And for the most they'll be lusting after higher-end Schecter Jeff Loomis or Ibanez Steve Vai models. Fenders and Gibsons are for old people - stupid ones, mostly.

Good to know I'm old and stupid.  :icon_scratch:

As for Schecter, I can't say I've EVER met ANYONE who lusted after a Schecter or Steve Vai model.  Do you know any kids rocking to Steve Vai, because I don't.  They're more into losers like Avenged Sevenfold and Devil Wears Prada, aren't they?

As for decent, cheaper Schecters, let me know when you come across a Schecter worthy of being more than a boat ore, because I'm yet to.

Whatever Schecter and Ibanez are making, Fender does it better for cheaper...
