Well, my replacement pick guard arrived today, so I was finally able to get this project off the ground a bit.  It's pretty much done except for installing the electronics and cleaning the lacquer off the frets (pots in pic aren't correct).  Looks naked without strings, but I was so happy with it I had to post some progress pics.  I tried a white pick guard, but it really looked plain and dressed it down too much.  I thought the pearl was going to be over the top, but it really did look better than plain white.  It was overcast today, so the pics are a little dark.
