Is it possible to dye a rosewood fretboard using alcohol dye and not color the inlays?

If not, should an oil based stain be used?

I want to "Orange" it.

Thanx,

Dave

I would say no because it is too dark...but a better question would be WHY?

Well, mine is fairly light w/dark stripes.

Point 2...why not? It's mine, after all. Eye of the beholder, and all that.......

I think rosewood would probably be too hard and oily to take a stain well. You should definitely try it out on scrap rosewood first if you really want to go this route.

+1  It probably won't stain well, but leather dye should do the trick.  Definitely test it out on a scrap first.

Whats the inlay material?  Most of them should be impervious to dyes.

it is not the color...but I think a plain maple fretboard would work nicely.  I did not know you already had the neck.

In addition to all of that, the dye would possibly accentuate the stripes not hide them, if the dark bits are more porous than light bits, like in other woods.

This has always been my opinion.  Unless your pitchin' in on the payments, your opinion don't count unless I'm askin!

That's what I want to do......Accent the stripes!

I've been playing since before most of you were born :binkybaby:, and I've never played a Maple fretboard I liked. They just don't feel right to me. Each to his own, I guess.

Thanks for the backup there bbl4ck. When you ask a question, you're looking for info, not opinions on artistic choices.

Back on point, though, the inlay material is supposed to be MOP. It's probably just plastic. (unless all mother-of-pearl is plastic....don't know about that one :icon_scratch:)

I'm using this build as a learning experience before I invest the big bucks in a Warmoth body/neck.

On another point, does anybody know the formula for Tobacco ? Skip the lung cancer jokes, please.

Thanx,

Dave
