Drilling neck mounting holes

I'm thinking of trying to drill the mounting holes myself in a cheap (non-Warmoth) Strat neck.

I know the standard size is 1/8 inch, but it does not seem to be that easy to get hold of drills in inch sizes in the UK without buying an entire set of 120 or so bits.

1/8 inch =  3.175mm, so would 3mm be close enough? or should I go up to 3.5mm in case the 3mm hole is too tight?

i think you'd definitely want to stay smaller if anything. the 3 mm would be fine i would think. being off by only .175 of a mm isn't much at all. anyway somebody else may say otherwise, but i can't see that being much of a problem

I agree. Start with the 3mm. If it's too small, you can always go bigger. Drilling a hole that's too big is a bigger problem.

Have you considered threaded inserts? A cheap neck would be a great platform to try it on for the first time. Supposed to work out quite well. Several people here have done it. There's a bit of a tutorial at http://www.unofficialwarmoth.com/index.php?topic=7465.msg99768#msg99768
