Drilling holes in a neck pocket

I am using a warmoth neck with a scratch build I am doing.  I would like to use the existing mounting holes in the neck.  My issue is I want to get the holes exact.  My initial tough is make a template of the heel of the neck and use that to mark the pocket.

Another option would be to fill the holes and start from scratch.  Thoughts??

I'm about to do the same thing. I intend to make a template from the heel of the neck then transfer the holes with that.

Neck mounting plates make good templates. Holes are a little oversized, but their placement is correct. Use one of those to place the holes, then draw centerlines to guide you. Use a drill press - those holes must be perpendicular to the neck/body.

it s good guide but where I place it in the pocket needs to be determined.  Guidelines will help

You can also take some old neck screws, cut them in half and discard the heads.  Then screw them into the neck backwards, with the points facing out, making sure you don't cross-thread them.  Leave a little bit of the original point sticking out of the neck holes.  Then fit the neck in the pocket and when it's where you want it, just press it down slightly.  It will leave four tiny marks in the neck pocket, exactly where you need to drill your holes on the drill press.  Depending on how tight your holes are, you may need a pair of pliers to get your modified screws in and out.  A little bit of beeswax does wonders.
