Any ideas on how to get this color on a bass? The body wood would be mahogany, think it would turn out okay on that or would it need a top wood of something lighter?

Where you wanting to get a transparent or solid finish like that? just looking at it something like the candy red fender use on p basses might be the same or a bit darker  :dontknow:
Just colour resembles my p bass a fair bit to me so just thought id suggest it

Not sure, but I have a 7-up green (officially called Candy Green) Clapton Strat  :icon_biggrin:

Story I heard is that Fender wanted to call it 7-up green because the color was taken from a 7-up can, but they were not given the rights to do so.
I believe they stopped producing this color last year.

Transparent, like that one. I know that looks like figured maple, but I thought maybe with black grain filler on mahogany..? I don't get this finishing stuff, so I'm not sure how to layer what. If it comes down to it I could probably get some low grade quilt maple for the top piece. I'm looking at a future scratch body to go with a W 30" neck..

Fender had a candy or metallic maroon like that a few years ago, don't
remember the name but it was like "Candy Cola" or something.

I did trans 'coke can' red on ash for a project recently and I added black grain filler.  I used StewMac's Color Tone Cherry Red and mixed it in denatured alcohol.  I used about a quarter of a bottle of dye to about a pint of alcohol to start.  Then I actually added some more alcohol to the mix for subsequent dye applications.  It actually gave the color more depth and it looked more alive as I put more color on in ever so lighter colors.  I went from an almost blood red to begin with and kept adding lighter reds till I had dyed the ash probably 15 times total.  I'm thinking with mahogany because it's sometimes almost a reddish pink, maybe you want to not go as heavy on the dye as I did.  And I did find out that alcohol will raise grain slightly, at least with the copius amounts I used... Lets just say I wasn't shy about using the dye mixture at all!!!  Oh, and wear gloves, man..... I made that mistake, had red cuticles for a month!

Thanks BB! Once I get permission from my wallet's handler I might be needing a custom mahogany control plate too, if you know a guy..  :rock-on:

No problem on the control plate....... I think it's been long enough since 'that guy' got banned...... and I've been real good all year honest Santa, I think the charade can end.......  :cool01:

You know I have some mahogany here, and some red dye, you want me to do a little experimenting?  I don't care for Dr. Pepper all that much, but my kid loves it!  I can get him a 6er of the Doctor and play around a little if you like.....  See what I can come up with!  I still have some of the dye I did the strat with in the freezer, maybe it'll give that effect on mahogany.  Ok I'm gonna do it, cause I'm curious..... I'll post pictures later!

Ok here is an extra strat control cover I have here that I had already did black grain filler on.  This is the StewMac color tone cherry red dye straight up dripped directly out of the bottle.  It's pretty damn red, but not really Doctor Pepper red.  Well one flavor down, 22 to go!

Buy 2 cases, drink all the Dr. Pepper, then cover the body with the cans.....problem solved... :icon_biggrin:
